[EXCERPT] . . . .
Heathcliff sees in young Catherine her mother's eyes and face, but it is more than that, for Catherine is at times as arrogant and stubborn as Catherine the elder once was. In the present, young Catherine forges a bond between the people that drove her mother to her demise. Catherine represents the love that was shared between her mother and Edgar, which is why she also reminds Heathcliff of what he lost and the sorrows that ultimately doomed him. As the emblem of the present, Catherine also signifies the perpetuation of time through the land. The land, and family estates situated on the land, becomes prevalent motifs and meaningful themes in Bronte's work. Through the family estates of Thrushcross Grange and Wuthering Heights, the status of the family is communicated throughout the generations.Catherine symbolizes redemption because she allows the past to become a distant memory, while still honoring her parents and her ancestry by living on the land that nurtured her. When her father dies, and finally, when Heathcliff dies, the last remaining ties to the past have been severed. It is now up to Catherine to herald a dawn of a new age. With Linton gone and the ghost of Heathcliff's rage ceasing to be a part of her life, young Catherine is now liberated. She is free to become the empowered matriarch that her mother should have been, but which only Catherine the younger can be. Catherine the younger never had the chance to learn directly from her mother, but she does so as if through spiritual osmosis. The lessons that Catherine senior never learned are passed down to Catherine in the form of an unspoken wisdom. Catherine the younger does fall in love easily but she is far less selfish and frivolous

Ancestry and bonds with family estates usually presume patriarchal lineage. In Wuthering Heights, matriarchal lineage becomes as important as lineage passed through the father. This is why Catherine is the core symbol of the novel and the one that best exemplifies its themes. Through her connection between past, present, and future, young Catherine allows for her mother's redemption posthumously. She therefore does her mother a great service and honor. Moreover, Catherine allows, inadvertently of course, the redemption of Heathcliff. When Heathcliff sees that the love of his life lives on in Catherine, he cannot hate her completely. The hatred he felt vanishes when he realizes that all he did have was love. That love was taken away from him, but Catherine the younger is not the cause of that problem. Instead, she signifies the future and the power of forgiveness and release. The future of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange are therefore fruitful and filled with mirth. READ MORE
