Workplace Personality

Personality and communication in the workplace

Describe your personality and communication style

I would describe myself as a fairly direct personality. I like instructions to be communicated clearly, when I am about to embark upon a task. I also try to be equally clear when communicating with others. 'Who' you are is less important to me than what you know. I try to keep something of a divide between my personal business and work life. I would not call myself reserved, but I do try to be professional. I am friendly and I like to engage in small talk, but there are certain barriers I do not cross, regarding the subjects I bring up at work. I have friends at work, but I do not socialize with my 'work friends' outside of work.

I am a moderately extroverted person. I like working and engaging with people, as opposed to sitting and staring at a screen all day. However, I also need some time to 'recharge my battery.' I like work to be fun, but I do take my work seriously. I think this is why I have often succeeded in leadership positions. I am professional and courteous and take an interest in people, but I do not cross the line between personal and work dealings and get involved in office politics. People appreciate that I say what I mean and mean what I say. I stick by the rules, but I am fair.

even though most managers appreciate my personality style. But one boss of mine seemed to expect all of her employees to intuitively know what she wanted. She acted as if giving clear direction was beneath her, but would be extremely upset if we did not do exactly what she desired. She was extremely emotional and did not set clear expectations for how employees should behave. She often seemed to play favorites, and it was frustrating to see that certain workers were clearly judged by different standards than others. It was bad enough to be judged overly harshly based upon her gut impressions rather than facts and figures, but to see her favor others and not put the work first was particularly galling.

People that 'over-share' in the workplace can be difficult to deal with and make getting work done a challenge. I often feel as if I should show sympathy and commiseration, but I don't like to condone negative attitudes or using the office space for personal reasons. Another colleague of mine often lets personal relationships infiltrate the office. She uses the office to conduct personal business over the phone or the Internet. She is frequently late handing in reports. It is frustrating to deal with her when I know I need something submitted on time. However, she is very friendly and nice to me. I often feel bad complaining about her because I know that she is not a 'bad' person. But she is also difficult to deal with because she would rather talk about personal matters than get the task done, which sometimes results in longer hours at work on my part, because of her delays. It can also be difficult dealing with the emotions and issues that spill out from her personal life into work. She also often engages in gossip about others, which I would prefer not to be party to.

A final colleague of mine is very cutting in his works and demeaning in the attitude he uses towards others. He does good work, but on a personal level can… READ MORE
