Quoted Instructions for "U.S.A., Germany and England Were the Industrial" Assignment:

Choose any painting or sculpture from the late 19th Century French Salon Period and the Impressionist Period

You will write an essay comparing and contrasting the form, content, and subject matter of the artworks. Your essay should include some information about the history and social significance surrounding the work, but the emphasis should be on the visual elements for this assignment. Closely examine the work and try to see how the visual elements are being used purposefully to give meaning to the subject matter.

and from the late 19th Century French Salon Period "Liberty Leading the People" by Eugene Delacroix.

Now, about the paper itself. Even though it is called an essay, it is really more like a mini research paper. You are required to research at least 3 sources including your textbook if necessary. Only one of these can be internet based, the others should be text or periodicals. The reason for this is that some internet sources are highly unreliable. You could be reading somebody's cockamamee opinions that have nothing to do with the actual truth or history. It can be very misleading. You will need to include a bibliography page of these sources as well as proper citations within the body of the paper for quotations and any ideas that are taken from a source. Please consult a style manual like the Chicago Manual of Style for proper citation types for various sources.

In addition, you will need to include an image of the artworks you are writing about. Please place these on the cover page for your essay and not in a seperate document. You will need to write your paper in Microsoft Word and submit it as an attachment to the body of an email. If you write it in Works or any other wordprocessing software, I will not be able to open it and will therefore not be able to grade it. The same goes for just writing your paper as the body of an email. Word documents attached to an email only.

The structure of your paper should be like this:

Opening paragraph, ending with your thesis statement (the point of your paper)

Second paragraph- a good place to discuss the history of the artist, artwork, and historical context in which the pieces were created

Next several paragraphs- the bulk of the paper where you outline and support your comparison and contrast of the two artworks based on their formal elements of line, shape, value, texture, color, subject matter and content.

Closing paragraph, beginning with a paraphrasing of your thesis statement and wrapping up the thoughts and opinions discussed in the paper.

Another VERY important thing to know about papers like this is that they are NEVER written in the first person. This means that no where in your paper should you use "I, me, or mine". It is assumed that the voice of the paper is yours unless there is a quote or citation. So instead of writing "I see the color red in this painting" you would write "The color red is used in this painting" or "The viewer would see red in this painting".
