Spartans were generally more interested in ideas like respect and seriousness. Severity was a common concept in the Spartan society and most of its members would have to act in agreement with their two kings and with the elders council.In contrast to Sparta, Athens was more liberal and was the place where democracy was born. Athenians were encouraged to think freely and to be unhesitant about expressing their opinions when they considered that they needed to do so. While the Spartan government was in charge of ideas widely promoted throughout the community, the Athenians were more interested in getting actively involved in developing arts and humanities.
The ancient Greeks had diverse opinions with regard to attitudes they should employ with regard to their community and to the role they played in it. The urban environment was essential in shaping the way that people thought and behaved, as the Greek society was largely a product of individuals coming together in urban locations and getting actively involved in discussing a series of topics.
