United States had waited one year to enter World War II, or had entered the War one year earlier. When Hitler's Nazi troops invaded Poland in 1939, World War II began in Europe. Yet the United States did not enter the war until the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The outcome of the war is well-known; it dragged on until April 1945 in Europe and August 1945 in the Pacific. However, there is still the conjecture that the U.S. could have changed the fortunes of war had they entered the war earlier, or waited to enter it.

What if America had entered the war a year earlier, in 1940? There are many scenarios applicable here, from the war ending earlier, to less loss of lives and the maintenance of France, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway (among others) with the Allied Forces. In the spring of 1940, Germany blazed across Europe, taking just about everything in its path. It swallowed up Belgium, France, Norway, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Luxembourg. Not only were those countries subjugated by Nazi rule, thousands of lives were lost in the process. Then the Nazis headed towards Britain, and the Battle of Britain began. If the U.S. had entered the war shortly after it started, rather than waiting almost two years, the war might have ended quicker, and more of those countries might have remained in Allied control.

Needless to say, thousands of lives might have been saved, and much of the European countryside might not have been so devastated. In addition, D-Day, (June 1944), might not have been necessary, because American forces would have already had a stronghold in Europe. The casualties as a result of the D-Day invasion were massive, and many of those lives might have been spared, as well. In addition, Japan might not have been so eager to attack Pearl Harbor if the European war was not going so much in the Nazis favor. Japan was allies with Germany and Italy, and for a time, it looked as if the Germans were far superior to the British and Allied forces. In fact, many people did not believe that England could hold out forever against the Nazis. The Nazis had better planes, ordinance, and technology, and Britain was facing defeat. In effect, the U.S. did become somewhat involved in the war partly in fear that England would not survive. They provided destroyer bases for England, escorts for ships carrying supplies to England, and the ships had permission to shoot at German submarines if necessary. Thus, the U.S. did have some involvement in the war before we actually entered it, although manpower and influence was severely limited. We will never know if the war could have ended sooner, and countless lives could have been saved.

If the U.S. had waited another year to enter the war, the outcome could have been very different. It is doubtful that the Germans could have been stopped so easily.
