[EXCERPT] . . . .

Checkpoint Transport Security Officers -- These officers are assigned the duty of manning various airport security checkpoints. They could, therefore, come in handy in ensuring that no prohibited items (such as explosives) find their way into an aircraft.

Checked Baggage -- checking luggage is of great relevance in the enhancement of traveler security. This helps identify contraband and other unwanted items which some criminal could be trying to smuggle out of, or into the country.

Transportation Security Inspectors -- In addition to inspecting TSA procedures and rate of compliance, field inspectors also conduct regular assessments of TSA personnel and their performance of various tasks. Deviations from the norm could, therefore, be easily identified and fixed.

Random Employee Screening -- The relevance of screening all those who have access to the airport, and most specifically, its secure areas, cannot be overstated. Those who could be used by terrorist to launch attacks might be identified at this level.

Bomb Appraisal Officers -- Their role is to largely reinforce the effectiveness of other functions, i.e. checkpoints.

Federal Air Marshal Service -- They mainly work in an aircraft; their key roles being to identify, thwart, and neutralize onboard threats (Bumgarner, 2006, p. 123). They usually work undercover.

Federal Flight Deck Officers -- these comprise of pilots and any other authorized flight crew such as navigators and flight engineers. Pilots are permitted to carry firearms and may make use of such fire arms as the situation may dictate.

Crew -- This is a well thought out program, where flight crew members are offered basic self-defense training. If an aircraft were to be forcibly taken over by attackers, this self-defense training could come in handy.

Law Enforcement Officers -- Law enforcement officers help in the disarming and suppression of individuals who exhibit dangerous or other negative behavior within the precincts of the airport. The security of the airport could be greatly compromised without law enforcement officers.

Hardened Cockpit Door -- Following the 9/11 events where terrorists took control of airplanes and made use of them as guided missiles, it is not difficult to see why this measure is critical when it comes to the enhancement of the security of transportation systems as well as the travelling public. Hardened cockpit doors make it difficult, if not impossible, for terrorists to gain entry to this critical area.

Passengers -- this is the very last security layer. The various screening processes passengers undergo greatly enhance the security of transportation systems as well as the travelling public by helping identify or apprehend dangerous characters, or prevent dangerous cargo from finding its way into the plane. The actions of passengers while onboard could also help thwart attacks. On this front, passengers are called upon to be more vigilant for any suspicious behavior in the airport and even after boarding their flights.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that the U.S. has enemies. There is also no doubt that these enemies are sophisticated, well-armed, and organized. With al-Qaida yet to be neutralized and ISIS showing signs of emerging as a major global security threat, there is need for the U.S. government to do all that it can to protect innocent citizens and vulnerable assets from the threat of terror. The measures taken by the TSA over time, as has been highlighted above, come in handy in this respect.
