[EXCERPT] . . . .

Another phenomenon that has been illustrated by the field of behavioral economics is the increased propensity for individuals to cheat when the size of the social group increases. In a large corporation such as Enron was, the executive team may have felt less responsible for their share of the blame since it could have been shared by others.

Research has also indicated that when test subjects were reminded of morality before an experiment, then the rate of cheating drops. The same might be true if business ethics were taught on a more regular basis. In my opinion, the problem that has occurred at companies such as Enron and the others, is far more complex that just a lack of regulations as many people try to attribute it too. There is also a cultural problem that idealizes competition to an extreme measure. It seems like some intervention is need for the culture, as well as the regulatory and oversight perspectives. The problem with unethical behaviors in the business world should be addressed by a comprehensive approach rather than just through legislative measures.

Quoted Instructions for "Enron: The Smartest Guys" Assignment:

This essay is intended to be a piece that explores how something works (or, conceivably, doesn*****t work), in terms of the nuts and bolts of the topic. But it is also intended to invite you to experiment with extended metaphors in your writing.

For example, if you are writing about how solar panels work, you also want to develop and investigate the larger questions solar panels might invoke or logically lead one to. Do they really save energy? Who uses them and how? What do they suggest about our relationship to energy in general and to the sun in particular? What future do they hold as a technology, but more importantly, what do they suggest about our future as a species? These are the sorts of questions that should ultimately emerge from your piece. You aren*****t, of course, going to be able to answer them all*****¦.it is the development of the inquiry that matters.

The essay should not solely focus on how insider trading works etc. It should discuss corruption resulted by such large institutions carrying out such acts. The essay should examine the documentary "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room" and from that discuss the ethical and social issues that arise from such trading.
