Issues in Telecommunications

Telecommunications Networks in a Global Environment

All of the problems that apply in normal networks apply in global telecommunications networks as well, however the degree to which these problems are magnified when networks are extended to a global scale, making the problems more complex and requiring new solutions (Hussain & Hussain, 1997). Simple capacity issues become far more difficult to solve in regions with lower levels of overall infrastructure development, and this can potentially affect service throughout the network and certainly if one expects truly global access at all times. If part of the network's operation is meant to control content being transmitted in any way, there is an added layer of concern due to the sheer size of the network and the number of potentials users, authorized and unauthorized (Hussain & Hussain, 1997). Security issues overall become far more magnified in a network that is global in scope for the same reason, making all of the problems of a smaller network take on a size and scope that cannot be met with the same solutions (Hussain & Hussain, 1997).

There are also some problems that are unique to global networks, such as ensuring adequate communications across borders with different standardizations (Hussain & Hussain, 1997). In addition to technical problems, there are many legal and regulatory issues that can be encountered in the building, maintenance, and use of global telecommunications networks (Hussain & Hussain, 1997). All of these factors can affect the use of a global network at all levels, from initial planning to

the end user experience (Hussain & Hussain, 1997).

Deploying a New International System

There are many considerations that need to be taken into account when deploying a new international system for telecommunications, from technical to legal to economic, and only through careful planning and control can these elements be effectively handled in such a deployment. Depending on the type of network, one key area of concern would be network vulnerability; especially if sensitive information including a variety of financial and political data is meant to be communicated across international borders, great lengths must be gone to in order to ensure that vulnerabilities are minimized if not eradicated, and that continuous efforts are made to make the network ever more secure (Malphrus, 2010). In order to meet this problem in a proactive and effective manner, deployment should take place in a series of regional steps with ample testing, assuring that each phase of deployment and each section of the network is protected against all possible vulnerabilities, and that data transmitted across international borders meets with proper security standards of all countries involved and the practical elements of the network itself (Malphrus, 2010).

Another significant issue involved in the deployment of an international telecommunications network is the meeting of international laws for bandwidth use. Legal counsel should be sought in all countries involved to ensure that all requirements are met in order to make the network in full compliance with all relevant nations. Failing to include this in the deployment of the network could cause serious problems leading to service interruptions.
