The Research Paper should be an appropriately developed literary analysis of any one of the literary works in the text. Basically, it is to be an objective statement communicating your understanding of some aspect of the work. This understanding is to be based on analysis and interpretation. This paper is refers to and is about an object outside of yourself--in this case the TEXT of the work--rather than expressing or being about yourself.

Some important considerations in this kind of writing are your reader and the situation in which you are writing. The situation is an academic one, concerned with objective knowledge and empirical data. Your reader is one who is familiar with your work in the sense of having read it and being interested in knowing more about it by considering it in light of your understanding, which the reader assumes to be both objective and rational.
