[EXCERPT] . . . .
A study by Larson (et al. 2014) confirms this, finding that in a study of 333, 803 U.S. Army active duty members returning from Iraq or Afghanistan, nearly 29% of U.S. Army active duty members had a profile indicating that they engaged in behaviors associated with abusing alcohol. Interviews of those flagged found that 61.8% of those had a serious enough problem to suggest a referral for further treatment. Additionally, the study stressed the need for further preventative counseling for lower risk drinkers given the culture of heavy alcohol use within the military: prevention of behaviors spiraling into addiction was cited as key. Encouraging self-awareness about potentially problem behaviors is itself important because individuals are often not fully cognizant of the extent to which they may be affected by a particular health condition or may somaticize a mental health issue as a purely physical complaint (Bogaerts et al. 2010),Conclusion
A review of the literature suggests that current screening and treatment of military personnel is inadequate, given the pervasiveness of the problem of substance abuse, depression, and PTSD, particularly amongst service personnel that have witnessed combat. The denial inherent to addiction combined with a cost-effective, goal-oriented treatment both suggest that the rationalistic approach of 7-DST can be more helpful than other types of substance abuse therapy. Substance abuse remains a difficult-to-treat condition, however, due to the profound stigma the behavior still carries.
