Structural Analysis

Scenario

Objective of this project is to design an internal working structure a-B-C-D-E-F to support extractor fans as well as other equipment. The structure inside the building is a brickwork at 10 miles south of Derbyshire and Derbyshire. The proposed design is to extend beam AB and CD into the substantial bricks walls at a and D. Moreover, the BE and CF are to be located by pins at ground level. The arrangement as well as associated loading is to be repeated at 10 m intervals indicated within the plan view. (Lightfoot, 1961).

The project constructs a moment distribution table and determines the moments at the joints to an acceptable level of accuracy.

Moment Distribution Table

Moment distribution is an interactive method to solve an indeterminate structure. Moment distribution is also a mechanical process to deal with statically intermediary structure by the successive approximation within the moments in the structure. Typically, the moment distribution is a preferred calculation to reinforce a concrete structure. (Volokh, 2002). To prepare the moment distribution table for this project, it is critical to analyze every joint of the structure to develop the fix-end moments. Analysis of the fixed-end moment of the project reveals that the fixed-end joints are not equilibrium. The goal of the project is to ensure that the fixed-end moments are released and the accuracy and equilibrium are achieved. Thus, the moment distribution method is a process of solving the set of simultaneous equation using the iteration technique to arrive

at the acceptable level of accuracy of the structure. To apply moment distribution to make the joints to arrive at an acceptable level accuracy, the paper constructs Moment Distribution Table as being revealed in Table 1:

Quoted Instructions for "Structural Analysis Scenario Objective" Assignment:

Deliverables required:
A succinct professionally written report including suitable text and supporting -
diagrams, graphs and calculations (10 pages maximum)
Your work will be marked on your ability to carry out the following tasks using the
following criteria:
• Moment Distribution table (45%)
• Bending moment diagram (30%)
• Beam design (15%)
• Report quality (10%)
You are working on the design of an internal structure (ABCDEF) to support extractor fans
and other equipment. The structure is inside a building housing fluidised bed driers at a
brickworks 10 miles south of Buxton, Derbyshire. Your proposed design is well underway as
illustrated in the sketches below. You have decided to extend beams AB and CD into the
substantial brick walls at A and D. Stanchions, BE and CF are to be located by pins at ground
level. The arrangement (and associated loading) is to be repeated at 10 m intervals as
indicated in the plan view. Most of the load data is known but you need to consult the
relevant British Standard to establish the imposed load for the fan room floor. Initial
estimates suggest that beams AB and CD should have the same flexural rigidity. The
estimates also suggest the flexural rigidity of beam BC should be twice that of AB.
Furthermore the flexural rigidity of the stanchions should be ¾ of that used for BC. At this
stage in the design you have decided to ignore the self-weight of the structure.
1. Construct a moment distribution table and determine the moments at the joints to an
acceptable level of accuracy.
2. Draw a suitably annotated final bending moment diagram and show all the associated
calculations.
3. Using elastic beam theory and an appropriate factor of safety, specify possible serial
sizes for the structural sections to be used for beams AB, BC and CD. Support your
answer with calculations and justify the decisions that you make.
4. Submit a professionally written technical report; 10 pages maximum.

Diagram will be uploaded on website. Will require 25%, 50%, 75% of work to be sent to me to check upon completion(even if only rough copy).
