[EXCERPT] . . . .

The building should be evaluated by a structural engineer to determine whether the exterior wall and floor systems can resist the forces generated by the design flood event. Flood loads can cause wall systems to fail, possibly resulting in structural damage that is more severe than damage from inundation. A primary design consideration in dry floodproofing is therefore the determination of the ability of the foundation, floor system, and exterior walls to withstand the forces generated by the design flood event. If the building strength is found to be inadequate, decisions must be made about how to achieve the desired level of performance. Options include strengthening the existing wall systems or other types of mitigation (e.g., elevation, acquisition, mitigation reconstruction). The costs and obstacles associated with retrofitting an existing building to resist flood loads may indicate that other floodproofing measures are more appropriate.

Conclusively, the Star Home Improvement team determined that dry floodproofing would be an appropriate and ideal method to protect the home from flooding and water damage. Star Home Improvement would employ " a combination of measures that results in a structure, including the attendant utilities and equipment, being watertight with all elements substantially impermeable and with structural components having the capacity to resist flood loads (Flood.org, 2014)."

Solution and Physical Retrofitting

Star Home Improvements planned for comprehensive measures in order to reduce or eliminate flooding of the home. The comprehensive measures included: continuous impermeable walls, sealants for openings, flood shields for op

enings in exterior walls, and drainage systems. Star Home Improvements reinforced the current wall exterior walls adjacent to the garage to prevent flooding within the garage and subsequent any leakage to the basement. The structural team sealed adjacent exterior walls "using technologies that include impermeable waterproof membranes and potentially strengthening those walls (FEMA, 2014)." The structural team incorporated sealants on the garage door to make it more watertight and resistant to flood loads. To better ensure that water does not enter the garage, Star Home Improvement installed a flood shield on back door entrance to the garage where the water could enter during a flood. The flood shield "products an excellent seal when it comes into contact with a stainless steel mounting plate that is permanently installed around the opening covered (Flood Panel, 2014)."

Finally, Star Home Improvement incorporated external and internal drainage systems. The drainage systems represents a "primary method of removing water that may seep through fissures and pathways in the protection system (FEMA, 2014)." Sequentially, Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, Figure 4, Figure 5, and Figure 6, below, storyboard the installation of the drainage systems. Figure 1 shows the garage front prior to the structural changes.

Recommendations

Star Home Improvement recommends that the client have the structural team check the integrity of the new structural system annually. While the implementations made by Star Home Improvement are top-quality and designed for longevity, any unforeseen change in any of the system components could decrease the efficiency of the system. Star Home Improvement also records historical data presented by the client of the effectiveness of the system. Star Home Improvement requests that the client call for a site evaluation upon the first three storms or incidences of potential flooding. The structural team will further evaluate the system in place and take measurements of any water entering the garage or basement.
