Developing and Analyzing a New American Family Sitcom

In a formal essay, students should address the questions: What is the significance of the sitcom that you have developed? What does it say about the American family? Why do you believe this sitcom is a necessary and needed addition to the American family sitcom canon? How does it fit into/compare with the American family sitcom canon?

Essay Submission: Students must turn in both a typed hard copy and submit to SafeAssign

Worksheet Submission: Students must turn in a typed hard copy

Length: 3-4 pages (not including works cited information)

Format: Word processed, proper MLA format, works cited page

Required Project Components:

ï‚· In order to receive credit for either project component, students are required to complete andsubmit both components.

ï‚· Students will be graded on each component separately.

ï‚· The two components will not be weighted equally.

Developing the Sitcom Guidelines:

ï‚· The created sitcom must feature a group of multi-generational characters who consider themselves to be a family unit.

ï‚· Sitcoms about a group of close friends will not suffice for this particular project.

ï‚· Students must use the sitcom worksheet and complete it thoroughly in order to help them develop their sitcoms.

ï‚· Students should present their information in a point-by-point fashion, modeling their information off of the worksheet and employing charts as necessary. Also, students should answer each question directly rather than creating a paragraph where the answers are mixed together.

ï‚· Students are encouraged to provide additional information on their sitcoms beyond the required elements listed on the worksheet.

ï‚· Students will be graded on the quality of their thoughts, reasoning, and motivations; the thoroughness in which they develop their sitcom and its pilot; and the effectiveness in which they convey the necessary information.

Essay Guidelines:

ï‚· This essay contains three main parts:

o Why is the sitcom relevant and necessary for American culture? What makes it uniquely American?

o What specifically does this sitcom state about the American family?

o Why will this story work best in a 30-minute sitcom format?

o What does the sitcom offer that is important/critical/new when compared to the rest of the American family 30-minute sitcom canon? How does it compare/contrast with a minimum of two different real American family sitcoms (must be from the ones covered on the course PowerPoint on Blackboard)?

Additional Essay Guidelines:

ï‚· The support for this paper will come through examples from the student*****s sitcom. For example, if the student believes his/her sitcom shows that parents are irrelevant than he/she should state: This can be seen in the pilot when*****¦.

ï‚· This essay should contain an argumentative thesis statement.

ï‚· Do not try to accomplish everything in this paper. Remember this paper is fairly short so the thesis should be succinct and the focus extremely tight.

ï‚· Students should refer to themselves in the third person. The first time, they should list both their first and last names. Subsequent references should either use a pronoun or only the last name.

ï‚· All the components of the essay should be seamlessly connected through the thesis.

ï‚· The essay will be read alongside the sitcom worksheet. Therefore the essay does not need to provide all details about the sitcom. The essay should, however, provide pertinent information about the sitcom as needed to support the essay*****s thesis. (In other words, if the student*****s focus is ethnicity then he/she will want to discuss the ethnicity of the characters in the essay.)

ï‚· Remember that thesis statements by nature are argumentative and should be supported by concrete details and facts. Your thesis statement should not simply be a statement of fact but rather it should be more complex and specific in nature.

ï‚· Avoid the use of first person in your thesis statement.

ï‚· Remember that the thesis statement is not a statement of intent (i.e. In this paper I will*****¦) but rather an argumentative statement that yyou will support in the essay.

ï‚· Example One: The sitcom Title of the Sitcom presents a unique depiction of the American family that has not yet been represented in previous and contemporary American family sitcoms.*****This thesis is too vague and does not provide a road map for the paper.

ï‚· Example Two: The sitcom Title of the Sitcom uses live-action mountain lions to explore the unique but relevant family dynamic of X which suggests that the modern American family is Y.
