The issue of self-esteem is one of the most important factors that influence the success of individuals. The performance of individuals on professional level determines the success of companies, which makes them very interested in the self-esteem and confidence of their employees. It has been observed that self-esteem influence the level of confidence of the individual, with important effects on the performance level.
Self-esteem is a psychological term used for representing individuals' evaluation of their own worth. Self-esteem is developed based on the beliefs and emotions of the individual in case (Mruk, 2006). In other words, self-esteem represents the perception of each individual on himself, his overall self-image, and how he or she feels about himself. This perception is a very subjective concept. It has little to do with reality, or with the reality of others. This is because each person has a different, subjective perception of reality. Self-esteem reflects this subjective perception of the individuals, and might not be in accordance with the perceptions of others. Therefore, self-esteem is the result of beliefs that the individual has been in contact with, the values developed by the individual in his relationship with society, and the different experiences of the individual. The beliefs of the individual start to develop in early childhood, when the child is very receptive to the actions of others. Therefore, people with influence on the child are likely to have a significant impact on the beliefs on the child. The values of the individual are developed in a similar way. They have a lot to do with the environment in which the child grows up in. If the child does not include physical appearance in his values, his self-esteem is less likely to be affected by such issues.
The experiences of the individual and how successful he is during their development has important effects on self-esteem. Based on these experiences, the individual can consider that he was successful or not. He is likely to associate other experiences with these, affecting self-esteem.
The levels of self-esteem can be improved. The Internet is an important source of articles and books that provide important advice on how individuals can improve their self-esteem (Antcliff, 2007). There are several approaches to improving self-esteem.
