[EXCERPT] . . . .
(R. v. Gayle, 2001).The decision wound up dismissing the appeal, but Sharpe's decision offers a relatively broad-ranging examination of these issues of specifically racial bias. But the practice of jury consultancy, as practiced by Hackman's character in the film, is not particularly widespread in Canada. As Vidmar summarizes: "Jury consultants appear to be largely confined to the United States, although they have occasionally been used in Canada and in a highly controversial case in Australia. Reasons for their failure to spread to the other countries are related to the absence of 'voir dire' practices and to judicial hostility toward these practices." (Vidmar, 41)
However, it is also worth noting that the use of a jury in a civil case as depicted in Runaway Jury is only common in the U.S.A. And in parts of Canada -- elsewhere in the world, juries for civil cases have fallen out of use.
6. Five people were polled with the following questions:
Q1: Do you think gun manufacturers should pay damages to people killed in gun violence?
Q2: Is personal manipulation of jurors based on facts known about them an unethical practice in a courtroom?
Q3: Should jurors be allowed to discuss their jury service after a trial is concluded?
Q4: Does money have too much influence over courtroom proceedings in America?
Q5: Do you give a single solitary droplet of shit about truth, justice, and the American Way?
The answers from my poll sample of 5 were as follows:
Q1: 3 yes, 2 no
Q2: 4 yes, 1
