Of course, those people are ignorant and/or racist. Even so, the implications are obvious and the rancor comes from all sides. For example, if a black man dates a white woman, there are racist whites that will say that "races mixing" should not happening. At the same time, many black people (women in particular) will lament that a black person should be dating another black person and that doing otherwise is a betrayal. Some would consider that racism as well but there are some huge racial and social overtones that underlie such views (Farr, 2011; Stanley, 2011).

Class works in much the same way. In many to most instances, people will date and marry according to their class. It is rather rare to see a situation where an affluent person will take up with a person that is of meager means. A major reason for this is that these two groups do not usually live in the same areas (although there are exceptions) and they most certainly don't usually run in the same social circles (Lewin, 2005). While there is something to be said for letting people gravitate to whom they wish to gravitate to, there are some exceptions. Indeed, people that engage in criminal behavior, use hard drugs or otherwise engage in socially repulsive behavior should generally be eschewed by any potential mate looking at that person. However, people break those rules all of the time. However, there are many other situations where racism, ignorance and other improper feelings lead to a condemnation of a relationship when there is no valid reason to feel that way. Just as Romeo and Juliet should have been allowed to enjoy their love and just as Antigone should have been allowed to properly bury Eteocles, there are many people in modern society that need to be less judgmental and/or mind their own business.

Conclusion

In the end, Antigone and Romeo & Juliet share many common threads, both with each other and with modern society. This is the beauty of people like Shakespeare. The themes and stories that men like him crafted are enduring and ever-present because of how applicable they are to modern situations and matters even though the works in question were written centuries ago. Much the same thing can be said for the work of Socrates, Plato and others. Alas, it is a persistent problem that many people will not or cannot learn the lessons that they could and should from literature.
