As many as 20% of RNs (including NPs) worked part-time in 2010. NPs devote a major part of their workday in interactions with patients, their families, co-workers, and administrators. While they normally work in well-lit, clean settings, some of them travel to the homes of patients. Nurse practitioners, when working in a hospital setting, pass a large portion of their time standing, and should be comfortable with stooping, bending and lifting. NPs are valued and important members of physician-led, patient-centered medical units who greatly contribute to patients' well-being (Maurer, n.d).

Leadership Attributes of the Advanced Practice Role

I am a transformational leader. Efficient leaders head their teams by example, inspiring behavior in subordinates through their day-to-day actions. I usually set personal objectives, which I endeavor to achieve at work. Many goals are connected with this fundamental leadership trait. I try my utmost to be a paradigm of integrity and professionalism. Competent leaders plan for achieving success. Right from creation of strategic practice plans for growth and progress, to formulating service deliverables and methodologies, I spend a considerable amount of time in research, learning and formulating strategies for attaining set objectives. Proficient leaders look out for people. I, as a leader in nursing practice, want to permit and encourage others to progress professionally, achieve success in work, and move forward in their career(s). In order to achieve the above goals, I will behave outwardly in a dedicated way, in keeping with my personal values.

A recent report shows a growing number of American employees declining health insurance offers from their employers, with the dramatic increase in individual premium cost across the U.S. over a period of five years. As well, not all Americans have employment where a choice of insurance or not is possible; many Americans work under 35 hrs/weekly so that they are not eligible for any employer-sponsored health care. Roughly 3 million fewer employees eligible for availing themselves of health insurance sponsored by employers enrolled in the offer in 2003, as compared to that in 1998. Situations and statistics are considerably different from 2003, now in 2015, given 'Obamacare' and alteration of the entire healthcare industry in the U.S.

While once health insurance sponsored by employers provided the most healthcare coverage to U.S. residents of the country, this has almost wholly changed with the changing economy and market forces. Most jobs are under 35 hrs; most companies avoid or limit health-care offerings; new laws require individuals to have their own health care under The Affordable Healthcare Act.

CEO and President of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.B.A., M.D., states that the pillar of the healthcare system of America is health insurance, sponsored by employers. As costs increase, fewer families and individuals have insurance; fewer businesses can pay for employee insurance coverage; and the number of Americans uninsured will go on increasing. Even individuals currently having coverage via their jobs might be at a risk of losing insurance coverage entirely, or having their health benefits reduced (RWJF, 2006). Home of the RWJF, New Jersey, like other states of the U.S., faces several healthcare and health problems. Satisfying the requirements of the residents of the state requires community-based innovative projects like New Jersey Health Initiatives, which support inventive projects by community-based non-profit corporations in New Jersey for improving healthcare and health of the residents of the state. This will meet specific healthcare and health needs in the state, in addition to bringing best practices and efficient models to the state of New Jersey (De Milto, 2015).

From the year 1987 up until October, 2014, NJHI (New Jersey Health Initiatives) has backed 252 community-based innovative projects for improving healthcare and health of the residents of New Jersey. As of last October, this program has twenty active projects. Recent work encompasses addressing of specific healthcare and health needs in the state:

Primary Care Workforce Innovations (2013): Seven primary healthcare practices in the state are carrying out innovative workforce models, in addition to using personnel more efficiently for improving the quality of and access to primary healthcare facilities, without raising costs.

New Paths to Professional Nursing (2014): Projects carried out at 5 university hospitals, colleges and universities are training certified medical and nursing assistants, as well as licensed practice nurses hailing from underrepresented population groups to join up baccalaureate programs in nursing in the state of New Jersey, before autumn 2016.

In leading policy-changing efforts, I would help bring best practices and efficient models to the state.

The outcome of policy change would be creation, in the state, of a culture of health by way of communities moving into action. Community projects will deal with health behaviors, physical environment, clinical care, and economic and social factors to make feasible changes to construct a Culture of Health. New Jersey Health Initiatives will back existing community-focused multi-sector coalitions in coming years, uniting community members and local leaders to formulate solutions, which grant every individual the chance to lead a healthful life (De Milto, 2015).
