[EXCERPT] . . . .

"Students' beliefs in their efficacy for self-regulated learning affected their perceived self-efficacy for academic achievement, which in turn influenced the academic goals they set for themselves and their final academic achievement." (Zimmerman, Bandura and Martinez-Pons 63) Here if students believed they would do well, they in turn did by setting goals, accomplishing these goals and receiving positive outcomes like getting good grades. Everything works together and one causes the other.

When a person develops good habits, they possess the foundation to become and remain resilient. Those involved in successful self-care eat well, maintain a good physical level of fitness, and actively socialize to build a strong support system. Those that do not take care of themselves end up depressed and unable to perform the necessary actions to better their lives. "Higher levels of depressive symptoms were significantly related to having less social support and decreased performance of diabetes self-care behavior. In addition, when depressive symptoms were included in the model, fatalistic attitudes were no longer associated with behavioral performance." (Egede and Osborn 276)

Goal setting and self-care go hand in hand. When one sets goals towards improving self-care, he/she can then feel more motivated to pursue other goals and promote healthier and better outcomes. It enables better access to resources and improves the foundation for resiliency. Working towards success is a part of everyone's innermost desires. Wh

ether that success is financial, spiritual, or physical depends on the person desiring it.

Engagement and Conclusion

I plan to fully engage during my time pursuing higher education. By experiencing various cultures through cultural studies, I gain insight on global consciousness. The world is full of continuous change. To know of the traditions and cultural norms of other countries, I gain a deeper insight on humanity and the experience of living on earth as a human being. Understanding people enables better communication. Communication and understanding leads to empowerment and effective leadership.

I want to be a strong leader in my community and in general by setting a good example. Women are emerging as strong leaders in society thanks to women like Hillary Clinton and the person of interest in this essay, Maya Angelou. These women paved the way by setting good examples and becoming successful in their pursuit of careers and passion. I want to know what it is like to fulfill my objectives and help those who are lost as I was.

In a way, paying it forward promotes sustainability. People learn from observing and if I project a positive image, a positive attitude that will positively influence others. It is hard to self-motivate because life is filled with obstacles. However, promoting sustainability through setting a good example and continuing work towards my goals will generate a desirable outcome.

Life is not about one's background or past mistakes. Life is about never giving up and learning from failures. It is about wanting to succeed and taking the steps necessary to succeed. People like Maya Angelou knew what to do to keep going. In doing so, she not only showed how resilient she was, but also what it takes to succeed.
