Literature Review (20%)

A literature review is an overview of significant texts relating to your specific field of study. It exists in order to prove your authoritative understanding of all significant research in the field, which can in turn help you to demonstrate the appropriateness and role of your own research. A successful literature review must be defined by a guiding concept such as your research objective, or the problem or issue you wish to discuss.

Your literature review should be in essay form, approximately 4 double-spaced pages (These pages will likely be able to be incorporated directly into your final project.) It should refer to roughly 5-7 sources you should locate these sources through independent research. The Literature Review is a structured explanation of what these sources say, why they are significant for research in your selected field, and how their claims relate to each other. The sources that you select might include: Government studies, industry studies, university-conducted research, student thesis, authoritative institutional websites, articles in professional journals, books, conference papers. Since the Literature Review is devoted to your analysis of other published research related to your field, every item that you include in your Literature Review must have its own list of *****References***** or *****Works Cited*****.

Structure:

The introduction of your Literature Review should provide a brief overview of your intended research project, or the question that you wish to answer through your research. You*****re welcome to use the first-person pronouns (*****I*****/*****we*****) in the introduction, although you probably should avoid them in the body of the paper. In the introduction, you should summarize the general patterns that you find in the sources you will be analyzing, whether they be patterns of information, debates, themes, and/or methodologies.

The highest ambition of a Literature Review is the ability to establish relationships between your different sources. Therefore, you should try to structure your paper in ways that foregrounds their relationships (i.e., similarities or differences). For that reason, I encourage you to avoid simply devoting one paragraph to each source, or beginning each paragraph with an author*****s name; try instead to organize your body paragraphs around issues or topics, indicating the way in which different sources apply to them. You may also wish to group or organize your sources according to debates (and sides thereof) or methodologies or results. Generally, strong Literature Reviews bring different sources into *****dialogue***** in each paragraph. You may refer to the same source at several different points throughout the paper, although you should avoid simple repetition by focusing on different elements of that source each time you mention it.

Your literature review should include a *****Works Cited***** page at the end, in a citation style appropriate to your field of study.
