quality assurance in health care facilities. It is an ever growing topic as the nation continues to examine the health care industry and the standard of care that is being provided. The writer uses three sources to explain the PDCA method of quality control and assurance and explains why this method is one of the most reliable methods to ensure top level success in the field of health care.

In recent years the health care industry has come under fire. Rising medical costs, grater expectations and consumer demand have all played a part in the current need to re-evaluate the field and be sure it is running at optimum capacity both in volume and delivery. Consumers who used to go with the flow will no longer allow hap hazard attempts at quality assurance and this growing demand has placed pressure on management professionals to provide quality assurance in the field. One management tool that is being utilized in this and other fields is the PDCA method. PDCA stands for Plan-Do-Check-Act theory. This theory seems to provide the stop gaps and check and balance system that is needed in a field so intertwined with consumer health and well being (Murton group Business Network Partnership (http://www.murtongroup.com/documentation/deming1.htm).

The successful management of any business includes the discovery of a management method that works for that particular industry. This is often the most important key to management success. In the case of the health care field quality assurance can often be improved through the use of the Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) method of management.

portant to understand how the theory is designed and operates.

The Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA) cycle is an all-encompassing improvement methodology."

The first step of the theory is to plan what to do (Murton group Business Network Partnership (http://www.murtongroup.com/documentation/deming1.htm).This can mean many things in the health care field because of the many aspects of the industry that must be performed. If it is about nursing then planning who to schedule, and what to have each nurse do during their working hours is the planning stage. If it is about surgery, then the planning the operation, the scheduling of employees, the preparation of the patient and the actual surgery is in order. Planning what to do gives everyone involved a working blue print of what will be expected each step of the way so that there are no errors in communication or operation. Every industry needs to plan what it will do but the health care industry should be especially diligent in this area as the outcome can have disastrous results otherwise (Murton group Business Network Partnership (http://www.murtongroup.com/documentation/deming1.htm).

The next step of the theory involves doing. It is not an actual attempt to carry out the plan but a "mock" style attempt so that everyone can see where there may be problems or things that need to be worked out before the actual work is performed. Again, because it is the health care industry it is vital that everything be worked out before the actual work begins because of the serious impact wrong results can garner.

Experimentation of the plan is important so that anything that may go wrong can be discovered at this stage and corrected with a new plan as needed Earned Value vs. Critical Chain Project Management accessed 12-14-04
