[EXCERPT] . . . .
Power and PoliticsInto the Fray
The protagonist of the case study makes two major mistakes.
First of all, he suffers from a severe lack of diplomacy or experience in "networking or office politics" as it is emphasized in the text. This inference is easily brought into the limelight by Michael's thoughts and assertions. Thus, at a certain moment, he states: "If I keep producing, it'll be obvious that I have the chops for the job" and, afterwards, gives the following reply to his friend, Albert: "She doesn't know anything about rum. Pierre knows I know what I'm doing. My numbers speak for themselves." Moreover, Michael seems to be very self-confident and acts according to the following rationale:"Pierre likes me, so why should I waste time and energy on making sure he knows my every move?"(Peebles, 2005).
Given the statements above, one can easily conclude that Michael considers himself to be a "lonely ranger" who doesn't need relationships for doing an excellent job. He has a very individualistic nature and, consequently, bares the burden of his daily tasks and goals all by himself. He doesn't feel the need to relate to the other colleagues whom he wrongly looks down upon. For instance, Michael says that Danielle, his major opponent, doesn't know anything about rum. This could be a false supposition, as he has never strived to interact with his colleague even if she was the one who has made the first move and invited him to a discussion touching upon business issues. Consequently, Michael doesn't know anything about his colleague. Maybe she is a "high-potential" employee, too, and does her best to learn more about the company for

Therefore, Michael should learn to work with his colleagues as he depends on them. Firstly, he should accept to exchange information and opinions with Danielle who could become one of his major allies in conducting his business slice.
Secondly, he should also improve his communication with Pierre, the company's CEO, who should cease to be just a gulf partner and become a dialogue partner, frequently updated on Michael's accomplishments, goals and strategies.
Besides the above dependencies, Michael's decisions and actions also rely on his wife's opinions. The case study pinpoints that Karen's career goals have already been sacrificed once for the family's sake. Therefore, Michael's swinging between going to China and staying in USA will receive a major and decisive blow from his wife position towards her own professional aims. Moreover, the youngest family members could also incline the balance in favor of one of the two extremes as they already attend schools and have friends in their home country. On the other hand, living in a foreign country and embracing such a different culture like the Chinese one imply significant adaptation skills that he and his family might or might not have.
Now, returning to the beginning of the analysis, one could state that the second mistake made by Michael consists of drawing up various scenarios that are not necessarily rooted in real life. For instance, he considers Danielle's actions to be illegitimate although his colleague may be well intentioned. Maybe she is a person who finds competition very healthy and constructive and is accustomed to behaving in the spirit of this principle. Maybe she really has some wonderful, brand new ideas and wants to join the "Knight Rum" team and increase her contribution to achieving the company's overall goals. Consequently, before drawing misleading conclusions, Michael should bridge the gap between imagination and reality by having a sincere discussion with the colleague whom he tends to see as… READ MORE
