Poe CommunicatorEdgar Allan Poe's literary works are regarded as some of the finest American writings ever produced. In order to earn such accolades, Poe must have tapped into a common trait that has brought many admirers to his books. The purpose of this essay is to explore the communication style that Poe used in his short stories and poems. Poe's unique and stylistic use of fear, suspense and doubt helped produce works that appear very real but also strike deep emotions that ring out truths in individuals as well. This essay will explore some of these designs in order to help contextualize Poe as an author and contributor to great communicative literary works of art.
Poe first and foremost was a story teller. This brand of literature requires the author to have grasped the literay tool of descriptive narrative. This style is classicaly expressed in one of Poe's more famous short stories, the Cask of Amontillado. This story, first published in 1846 in a magazine is a tale set on revenge and violence. Poe voices the story from the perspective of the murderer or antagonist in this story demonstrating a narrative technique that seperates itself from the normal by using a negative viewpoint.
Poe used chilling language in this story from this first person perspective. The opening paragraph of the story set the tone for the dark and macabre setting this author became famous for communicating. We can feel the pain of the narrator in this story when he claims at the beginning " I must not only punish, but punish with impunity. A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. Poe does not hold back in this story has he assumes a mental standpoint that can only be classified as twisted. As the narrator executes his murderous plot in the story, Poe uses language and metaphor to set a scene of commonplace, making the distinction that much more alarming. The narrator remained calm as he proclaimed "When at last the clanking subsided, I resumed the trowel, and finished without interruption the fifth, the sixth, and the seventh tier. The wall was now nearly upon a level with my breast. I again paused, and holding the flambeaux over the mason-work, threw a few feeble rays upon the figure within."
Poe was also a poet and communicated his feelings very well in this type of literature as well. In Annabel Lee Poe's doom and gloom takes another shape of opportunities gone by and regret. The reader feels the darkness and sadness expressed in this poem as Poe appears to strip his heart of all emotions and leaves it exposed for all to gape and wonder at. Death and grief has stricken the narrator of this poems and we really feel it when he proclaimed:

And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
