Personality

Young Goodman Brown" is a short story revolving around the major character himself, Goodman Brown ("Young Goodman brown, 2006). The plot of story may seem very simple but as one reads along until the very end, all the hidden meaning behind every word used in the story, the real personality of each characters, each scenes/scenarios depict a more profound meaning. There really is more than meets the eye in this story.

The story talks about Goodman's dream. He bade his goodbye to his wife then went out to meet a man which turned out to be his 'old' version. He and his 'old' version went deeper into the forest while his 'old self' talked about something which he did not recognize at first to be about his faith. But while they were walking he would sometimes turn his back as if wanting to go back to his wife, but did not have that very strong urge to really go back. They stopped in an area where he witnessed a certain ritual which he interpreted to be demonic or satanic. He also saw some people he knows which seemed to be part of the ritual. That's when he wakes up.

This dream shows that Goodman Brown's faith is being put to a test. His faith in his religion, his trust in the people he treasured the most (such as his wife, his parents and some of his colleagues) and his confidence in himself is not very strong. This dream just disclose that in his subconscious mind, he is actually questioning his own faith, his love for his parents and his wife, Faith, and his trust towards his friends and acquaintances.

The story ends in a narration that Goodman Brown died and not so many people were saddened. This is because he has lived

the remaining days of his life fully distrusting all the people around him. Paranoia has eaten his whole being that he is not able to get along with other people without thinking that they might do something bad to him or that they might put him into the hands of evil.

However, aside from this implied meaning, there is another aspect of personality that is tackled in this story. Aside from the lack of faith, Goodman Brown has been showing a tremendous amount of pride. It is his pride that made him thought negatively of other people. It is his pride that prevented him from asking anybody's help, even from his own wife.

The kind of pride shown in this "Young Goodman Brown" story is a form of negative pride. This is the kind of pride that doesn't do any good. It can be easily seen from Goodman Brown that because of his pride, he is not able to change the course of events. He could have saved his life from further miseries. He could have had a better life with his wife and friends. He could have had a better ending.

Pride has eaten most of Goodman's positive attributes. His pride has stick to his very own personality making him forget about other and more important aspects of life such as love, respect, trust and faith. What happened to Goodman Brown is the best example of how pride can negatively affect the individual himself. The kind of pride that has enveloped Goodman Brown is the kind of pride that should not be kept nor maintained in one's self.
