Personal Statement -- Advanced Generalist Masters in Nursing

Pursuing an Advanced Generalist Masters degree in the field of nursing has always been a dream. Since completing my Bachelors of Arts in English Literature in 2009, I felt that my purpose was to make a difference in the lives of others. The Advanced Generalist Nursing Program is designed for students with previous baccalaureate degree(s) in an area other than nursing. Additionally, it provides the groundwork for practice as an administrator, public health nurse, clinical research manager, informatician, or nurse manager. Such a degree builds upon clinical knowledge and experience by teaching important leadership skills necessary for today's complex health care arena. Although several contributions were made in diverse arenas, I yearn to give more; hence, the reason to embark upon the next chapter of my life in the field of healthcare -- helping those in need.

Reason for Pursuit

Currently, I hold a Bachelors of Arts in English Literature in which I am very grateful for this accomplishment. However, my desire is to enhance the lives of others, and therefore, I had always considered nursing as a career. After graduating from college, I became an intern at Morgan Stanley, and subsequently, I held various banking positions. Unfortunately, I was affected by a downsizing in October 2011, but fortunately, this represented a turning point in my life, sparking my decision to enter the healthcare field. My inspiration is not only derived from my intrinsic passion, but I have a friend in medical school and another friend who is earning her Doctorate in Nursing. Moreover, their support and encouragement in my academic pursuit has added fuel to my quest to become a part of an esteemed group.

Sadly, my father passed away from cancer when I was seven years old. Consequently, I had to take care of my mother, plus learn to take care of myself. Because of my father's illness, my mother was severely depressed. When caring for my sick father, I learned how to administer his medication and injections. Since his death, I have always felt a deeper sense of compassion for those who are sick or injured after having seen what my father had endured. Accordingly, I want to do something in which my father would be proud of me; I think of him every day. In turn, I may enrich the lives of so many who need caring and empathetic healthcare professionals.

Strengths for the Nursing Profession

With holding positions in sales, customer service, and administration, I gained the ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal. Such skills are paramount in the nursing profession. Additionally, I have a strong command of the English language in which these skills were acquired during my undergraduate tenure. Furthermore, I work well within a team to reach organizational goals, thus allowing synergistic efforts to pool resources for the collective benefit. Multi-tasking and organizing time wisely has facilitated effective and efficient prioritization. Based on my diverse project management skills, presentation skills, interpersonal skills, customer service orientation, investigative research, results-oriented, problem solving, decision-making, and effective communication abilities, I believe my background and experience aligns with the needs for role of Advanced Generalist Masters in the field of nursing. As a result, I could quickly become a valuable contributor for any healthcare organization.

Career Goals and Methods to Investigate AGM Role

My career goal is to work in nursing administration. Eventually, I desire to earn a doctorate degree, thus contributing scholarly practice and leadership to the field of nursing. "Current evidence supports nursing practice at both the generalist and advanced levels is a shared responsibility within nursing and healthcare" (Kagan, 2004). Insomuch, my career goal is deemed as an intricate part of a whole. I have always valued education as a life-long process and a tool to further and to enhance one's abilities. I am seeking an environment that embraces diversity, empowerment, integrity, and professionalism, as well as an opportunity for continued growth and development. My desire is to make a difference in the lives of others, yielding further contributions and challenges, in addition to solving problems and facilitating change.

With respect to inquiry methods, I have conducted some research online and have spoken in depth with a couple friends in the profession. One friend is a nurse who works in the ER, while earning her D.N.P and the other friend who has a Bachelors degree conducts training for surgeons in various capacities. Additionally, several articles contributed to my knowledge and motivation to pursue the nursing field. According to Hensick (1996), four essential features of contemporary nursing practice are critical: attention to the full range of human responses to health and illness without restriction to a focused orientation; integration of objective data with knowledge gained from an understanding of the patient or groups subjective experience; application of scientific knowledge to the processes of diagnosis and treatment; and provision of a caring relationship that facilitates health and healing. Furthermore, if reform works, millions more patients will have health insurance and will want care. Eventually, that should mean more jobs for nurses. However, most of those new jobs will not be in hospitals in which most nurses are currently trained to work. Chiefly, nurses with an education that provides advanced training, especially in areas, such as home health nursing, will be a future need (Cafazzo, n.d.).

Volunteer and Community Service & Life Challenges

With perseverance, I withstood a great deal of life's challenges. Besides dealing with my father's death, I have also dealt with my severely depressed mother. Learning to empathize has enabled me to realize that some people have issues in which they simply cannot control. Essentially, I have learned how to depend upon and to take care of myself, as my mother spent most of the day in bed. When I was 17 years old, I was sexually assaulted by my brother who had recently moved in, and later, we learned that he had developed paranoid schizophrenia. Sadly, he was sent to a group home and lives on government assistance. Seven years had passed before I was able to attend family functions in which he attended. It is unfortunate to observe his condition, but I realize his mental illness is not within his control. During college, my resources were limited. I used loans and Pell grants because other financial means were unavailable, plus my mother did not have much money. Fortunately, all loans were paid back, and I worked a part time job through most of college to help pay for my school expenses.

While working at Best Buy, I gained volunteer experiences at the annual "relay for life" cancer event sponsored by Best Buy. My role was to set up the tents, help with food and snack set up, and to organize the participants. From 2008 to 2009, I worked this event for two years. Additionally, I volunteered at my local Methodist church food pantry and food drives, plus taught bible school over the summer for children ages 8-12, from 2006 to 2010. After graduating from college, I moved to a different state in 2010 where I volunteered at the local church and helped with the Girl's basketball and volleyball. On a monthly basis, I provide baked goods to a women's center, plus I am in the process of having my dog trained to visit with senior citizens to provide them some comfort and happiness.

Leadership and Work Experiences

My experience brings versatility, a high level of commitment, motivation for success, a strong diverse background, and an ability to relate to students, staff, and faculty.
