[EXCERPT] . . . .
Valuable time is saved in not having to go to the Imaging Department to retrieve the image or having to wait for it to be returned to the ward." As many people in this industry know time is can be a very precious commodity when trying to save lives and heal the sick.PACS also has some disadvantages as well. PACS is a very expensive project in most cases. Maintenance upgrades are costly and must occur on a regular basis in order to remain fresh and viable within this setting. Pilling (2003) investigated the usability of this system with many clinicians to get a better understanding of how progressive this system appears. Although more advantages to disadvantages were determined in this study, a key component to this system was revealed: " New technology will only be accepted by users if they can see that it makes their working lives easier. The initial acceptability of the PACS was good, with numerous compliments and very few complaints.
IT departments can help rescue this situation with a little knowledge and common sense. IT professionals are trained and programmed to work in this type of field and can be used as a helpful tool in eliminating confusing computer skills that are lacking in most hospital staff. When IT and health professionals put their heads together, new solutions are sure to arise that will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization.
