[EXCERPT] . . . .
Org VisionThe organization that I have selected is the Department of Social Services. This is a county department that promotes, safety, self-determination and self-sufficiency for families in the area. There is a high degree of buy-in for the organization's vision because people want to make the lives of our neighbors better. The organization takes its leadership from the county, but there is strong leadership from within the DSS. We have the organizational mission to deliver our services in a professional and caring manner.
Mission and Vision Analysis
The mission and vision are strong and provide sufficient guidance for the people in the organization. A good vision should provide "the inspiration for the daily operations of a business" and help shape the decisions that it makes (Hom, 2013). The vision statement accomplishes this by providing a vision of society that we want to see. There is emphasis on the word "self," which guides us to having policies that encourage people to rely on their own skills and initiatives to achieve their goals in life. We realize that our role, then, is as enablers, people who help others to help themselves. This stands in contrast with a view of social services as something that encourages dependency -- our vision is the opposite of that. Yet, the vision is still very much oriented to helping people be better, something we feel fortunate to be in the position to do. We can see the power of this vision when we look at our clients. We see them in need, but after we have been able to lend them assistance, we recognize that our clients are often quite successful in their lives, and leave us on the path to their dreams. Thi

The mission statement is different than the vision statement. As Hom (2013) notes, the mission statement are not future oriented. They are present-day oriented and are "designed to convey a sense of why the company exists to both members of the company and the external community," with company in this case being the organization. We recognize that this ties in with our vision, but in addition to knowing what we intend to do, the mission statement tells us something about how we are going to do it. Hull (2013) notes that the four characteristics of a good mission statement are that it answers the questions of what the organization does, how it does it, for whom and what value is brought. The mission statement of the County Department of Social Services answers all of these questions, though the question of value is self-evident. Helping others to help themselves has value and I think we all recognize that so it does not need to be stated.
