[EXCERPT] . . . .
Every aspect of the McDonald's restaurant operations is controlled, including customer service. Recent decisions that alter McDonald's approach to fast food, by integrating healthier choices have not changed the underlying business needs or operational decisions.McDonald's is responding to consumer demands for increased knowledge of nutritional content, and also for different menu items. Criticisms about the company's spreading itself too thin, or its now being in competition with Starbucks are valid, but the company needs to stay in touch with its customers and respond to their needs and desires. The upgraded restaurants with designer furniture and improved children's play areas are helpful for attracting young and more upscale families.
Brown, Blackmon, Cousins & Maylor (2013) agree, "organizations can no longer compete on a single dimension such as low cost, high quality, or delivery, but must provide all of these (and more!) simultaneously," (p. 5). Operations management provides the specific strategies by which organizations can respond to the high pressure in the global marketplace. Few companies can exemplify the role that operations management plays in sustaining market share worldwide than McDonald's.
