[EXCERPT] . . . .

To be entrusted with this responsibility, one must have a strong sense of the overarching moral constructs that inform our society. Such morals, as the responsibility not to bring harm on others, are true in the healthcare context and beyond. But in healthcare especially, morals must be seen as the blueprint for all decisions and actions.

Ethics are typically defined more contextually. Where morals are constant and universal, and values are deeply personal, ethics are likely to be institutional. This means that any number of nursing associations or given healthcare contexts will provide their own carefully constructed ethical codes of behavior to which one is expected to adhere. In fact, because the ethical code will typically come from an employing organization, there may be occasions when this code diverges from one's personal values. For instance, I might be employed by a healthcare facility that prioritizes expediency of visits and rapid discharge as a way of achieving profitability. This would present a dilemma for me because my values lead me to a more patient-centered style of care. The resolution would be to strategically manage my time to dedicate the most possible attention to patients in the allotted time.

Reflect and share your own personal thoughts regarding the morals and ethical dilemmas you may face in the health care field. How do your personal views affect your behavior and your decision making?

e. The same is true of patients and the reality is that these views aren't always compatible. For instance, some extreme religious groups don't believe in the use of vaccinations that are required by law and have played an important part in reducing the dangers of public epidemic.

As a healthcare professional, it is my responsibility to maintain a healthy respect for the culture of my patient population without allowing this to cloud my own understanding of that which is most optimal from a medical standpoint. This promotes a dilemma where the nurse my find the ideal way to urge the patient toward the medically appropriate course of action without undermining the spiritual ideals or cultural practices of the patient in question. Ultimately, the choice will be the patient's. In such cases, as the healthcare provider, all one can truly do is provide the right information, advance and compassion and hope that the patient makes the right decision.
