A collective sense of persecution and oppression can be a guiding point from which a cultural identity is created, recreated, and co-created. African-American and African narratives have been recreated in light of the post-colonial reality. Ali undoes the narrative of white supremacy by taking back power in the ring, and by manipulating the media to present him in the way that he would like to be presented as the protagonist in his own life. As a result, his biography becomes its own narrative, which in turn impacts cultural and personal identities.

Narrative is a structuring mechanism within culture. With narrative, cultures agreed on shared ideas, values, goals, symbols, myths, and norms related to race, class, gender, and social power. The only way to change realities related to race, class, gender, and social power is to alter their underlying narrative structures. The characters in 21 Grams may be simply suspended between the dimension of dissolution and creation of a new narrative that does away with denial and self-hatred, and which also abnegates patriarchy. The global community will ultimately come to understand itself anew using new narrative structures.
