[EXCERPT] . . . .

His uniqueness can be attributed to minimalism because it allowed him to express anything he wished to in his compositions, and he was fond of its diatonic and pulsating sounds. Despite the similarities of some of his pieces with those of other minimalist composers, he developed a personal approach to minimalism by doing away with the rhythmic energy associated with repetition, modality and tonality. He is also able to combine different styles in his compositions with unmatched prowess.

As one London critic once put it, "Adam's music exists in that halfway house between the heavyweight rigor of the old world and the feel-good freedom of the new" (Ruhe). While most musicians struggle to keep up with modern trends in an attempt to attract young listeners, Adams's compositions achieve a balance between traditional and modern styles, which makes his music original and appealing to various age groups. For instance 'El Nino' became one of his most celebrated works because he used Handel's 'Messiah' to create a modern version of the birth-of-Christ story (Ruhe). McCardell also states that his observation of current culture coupled with his sense of tradition largely influences his methods of composing (42).

Unlike other musicians of his time, Adam's music has always been driven by a desire to speak for America's diversity. Just as Aaron Copland, an American classical composer, managed to create an open prairie and optimistic style of music in the 1940s, Adams also works to create an American musical sound that finds the essence of the current times (Ruhe). He also inspires young musicians, such as the Attacca Quartet, who emulate his styles and add an edge to his music and in the pr

ocess, keep it relevant. Moreover, Adams does not shy away from controversial topics. His second opera 'The Death of Klinghoffer' was criticized for glorifying terrorism upon which he asserted that he was merely investigating the motivations for people who commit brutal acts (Ruhe).

Conclusion

John Coolidge Adam's dramatic works, fondness for topical subjects and strong roots in minimalism sets him apart from other musicians of his time. He was able to discover his own style that inspired works that have been well received to date. His compositions are able to combine different styles and they achieve the proper balance between his sense of tradition and his observation of current culture. Driven by his appreciation for America's diversity, he was able to come up with an American sound that captures the essence of today, and most of his work is celebrated due to its originality and uniqueness. Adams' inclusiveness also enabled him to reconnect with an audience that had been alienated from concert music without abandoning traditions. He has managed to produce famous and classic works in a variety of genres with a personal minimalist approach. He, therefore, remains one of the most gifted composers of his time.
