[EXCERPT] . . . .
Multinationals are expected to take the high road regarding social and ethical issues. Morality is expected and the deontological approach of the means being as important as the ends is even more common after the Enron scandal. Morality has become the standard that stakeholders use to judge multinationals -- and the expectations are transparency, disclosure and acting in a way that promotes not only the global economic idea of cooperation, but human rights and actualization as well (Muchlinski). Thus, there is no direct answer regarding whether multinationals are helpful or hindering to developing countries. Just as people are individuals, so are corporations. However, given a multinational corporation that adopts the principles of CSR, that works within the developing country's culture and political system for the common good, and provides a system in which both sides reach a win-win paradigm of modernization (e.g. education, training, goods and services, quality of life, etc.), then the developing country does benefit from the multinational. The key is both the intrinsic culture of the multinational and the responsibility that the corporation holds for the developing country. The days of removing resources without adequate planning and cooporation are over -- the days of shared responsibility and sustainable options, training and educational programs for citizens, fair wages and benefits, and clear human goals to enhance human rights are now the operative model for development. (Quinlivan).
