[EXCERPT] . . . .

3. discuss whether or not (and why) your children's picture book should be included in a child's early education; as a parent would you use it?

I would. It is important that children learn about both the good and the bad of America's heritage, including its attitudes towards native peoples.

4. discuss why the perspective(s) presented by your book were not available in previous generations

In previous generations, Native American culture was presented as 'savage' and the only 'good' Indians were those who helped white men and accepted their ways.

5. discuss how the perspective of your book deals w / stereotypes/assumptions about differences based on race, class, gender, [dis]ability, etc.

Young Bull is taught that his native ways are 'bad' simply because they differ from those of white society. The book shows the psychological pain this institutionalized discrimination causes the young boy.

6. discuss how your book assists readers in under-standing what others have to face in life

The culture of Young Bull is contrasted with that of the white school consistently throughout the book. This highlights to children how their culture is not necessarily the only correct and 'normal' one.

7. discuss specific ways your book presented me-thods for dealing with the difficulties that result from being perceived as different or strange

Young Bull must look within himself and draw up inner resources and memories so he can still retain a positive sense of being an Indian, even when living amongst whites.

cuss whether your book teaches tolerance and celebration of cultural, social, economic, and/or gender differences or focuses on eliminating the problems: racism, sexism, classism, etc.

The book shows how intolerant government authorities were in the past and thus encourages children to question current discriminatory assumptions. This demonstrates to students that they must often take a brave stand against conventional wisdom to combat prejudice.

9. briefly compare/contrast at least two expert reviews and/or evaluations of your children's picture book; please include the website addresses for your expert reviews.

Beverly Slapin, a reviewer for the American Indians in Children's Literature (AICL) praises the illustrations in the book: "open, light expanse of the Great Plains with the depressingly dark confines of the school" (Slapin 2007). However, Slapin finds the portrayal of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School insufficiently harsh, noting that the children were subject to corporal punishment and many died of malnutrition. The book's kindly teacher who helps Young Bull would not have existed in the school. Paula Giese concurs: "The book is unrealistic only in that it understates the misery and wretchedness that were deliberately used against these children" (Giese 2007).
