Identify and explain one ideal we have of media in its democratic role, and one way Curran suggests that our actual news media does not quite meet that ideal. Then point to one way in which online news either meets that ideal better, or continues to fail to.

The market system creates inequalities, as Curran argues, that must be addressed by redistribution and policies that are shaped by the political system in a democracy. Furthermore, collective decisions through the state should be based on relevant information and logical argument; which media entertainment does not provide. Since the entertainment aspect of the media does not really inform the public, a "starved and anorexic" democracy results. Although ideas such as electronic voting may show promise, it is unlikely that the distribution of the technologies in the public or the public will in general will create a functioning democratic system. There are four ways that Curran suggests that the situation can be improved. One is strengthening media staff rights to concentrate on the actual issues rather than simply the entertainment value.

Explain how medium theory (discussed in Littlejohn & Foss and in Cavanaugh) and social construction of technology (discussed in Cavanaugh and in lecture) might pose different explanations about the emergence of Twitter as a source of news and its importance. technology in different ways. One perspective is that technology shapes our lives and the other proposes that our lives shape technology. Twitters emergence is interesting because it is a decentralized system that the user can control. Therefore the human choses which media channels that they can view on Twitter and offers a customized approach. This seems to suggest that individuals have some level of control over the technology.

9. Papacharissi suggests that the web and social media reveal a kind of civic narcissism she believes is endemic to online communication. In terms of the part social media play in the "public sphere," does she think this civic narcissism is a good thing or a bad thing? Explain. Do you think as social media are increasingly for political activism (see Gladwell, Stone, and Zuckerman for help), this exemplifies or refutes Papacharissi's point?

The role that a social media play in political activism is no longer deniable after the events that unfolded in the last few years. Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube played a vital role in the events that unfolded in Egypt, Tunisia, and other countries in the region. Although some level of civic narcissism is certainly undeniable, there are also legitimate uses of these technologies by groups that are socially active.
