Several organizations employ organization development (OD) strategies in order to j help them improve their effectiveness (Cummings & Worley, 1993). One of the strategies that are employed is organizational diagnosis. This strategy involves the assessment of an organization's current level of operation so as to design an appropriate and relevant change intervention. The concept of organization diagnosis is a crucial element of organizational development and is used in a way which is very much similar to the ones used in medicine (medical model). This process however involves the conducting of test, collection of vital information on the organizational system and the evaluation of this information in order to effectively prescribe the appropriate course of action. Organizational diagnosticians must therefore employ specialized methodologies to collect the vital information on a given organization, to effectively analyze this information as well as design an appropriate intervention as suggested by Tichy, Hornstein, & Nisberg (1977). The merger between Microsoft and Skype presents a potential case of organizational diagnosis. This is necessary so as to determine how certain aspects of Skype like inputs, productivity, resources, outputs, throughput effort, strategy as well as performance. The main purpose of such as an analysis is to see if there are any important issues at the organization (Skype) and how they ay affects its integration into the main company (Microsoft).

Before embarking on the analysis, it is important for us to view the organization a complete system (total system). The total system can be considered to be a representation of open system theory. This is in line with the opinions of Katz and Kahn (1978) which suggests that an organization can be regarded as a total system having;

Inputs

Throughputs and Outputs that are effectively connected via feedback loops.

In this paper, we use the following models in performing organizational diagnostics. McKinsey 7S Framework, Congruence Model for Organization Analysis, Burke-Litwin Model of Organizational Performance & Change, Force Field Analysis, Open Systems Theory and Falletta's Organizational Intelligence Model

McKinsey 7S Framework

The McKinsey 7S Framework evaluates a given organization using seven variables including organizational structure, organizational strategy, systems, skills, style, staff, as well as shared values. In this regard we can clearly see that the structure of Skype is not exactly similar to the for Microsoft.That is why it is important for Microsoft to make important changes to its organizational structure so as to accommodate the extra functions that would be created among its organizational ranks when it integrates with Skype. Under the new arrangement, both organizations would have to make changes to their structure in order for the deal to work. Under the new strategy for instance, Microsoft would have to create a Skype division which must appropriately report to its CEO, Steve Ballmer.

The fact that Microsoft bought Skype, a company that makes profits off a free product is just wonderful. That is why it would be a great idea for Skype to be appended onto Microsoft's structure as a separate and autonomous division as suggested by Bryce (2011). Microsoft and Skype have decided they want to do an Organizational Diagnosis to determine how various aspects of Skype are aligned such as inputs, resources, productivity, throughput effort, outputs, performance, strategy, etc. They want to know if there are any significant issues at Skype and how these issues might affect its integration into Microsoft.

Download and read this white paper by Falletta about OD models. Salvatore Falletta, President and CEO of Leadersphere, has written a white paper that reviews several commonly used models of organizational diagnosis. We will be using several of these models in conducting your integrative Case project. The relevant part of this paper in terms of this class is the first 31 pages. The last part of the paper (pp. 32-43) deals with the theoretical foundations of the Burke & Litwin model, Falletta*****s Organizational Intelligence Model, and reading that is optional. We are not covering Falletta*****s Organizational Intelligence Model.

Falletta provides an overview of Open Systems Theory (OST) in his paper (pp. 8 & 9). Keep in mind that OST is not an OD model, but rather is a basis for most of the later models. For a deeper understanding, go to the following optional reading and read about systems, systems thinking, and organizations as open systems. You will see that businesses are not unlike living organisms. They depend on the environment for sustenance. They are comprised of multiple, mutually dependent parts. And they affect the environment in the course of their daily activities. Open systems theory provides valuable insights into organizations.

Review Case Analysis since it is so important in this final course. The purpose of a Case is to show that you have thought critically about the subject matter that you are learning AND to make an argument for a Claim about the specific situation in the Case assignment. CASE 2 ASSIGNMENT:

There is some disagreement in the Executive ranks as to which OD method or model should be used. Some executives have familiarity with a couple of models, but it seems to be only based on what they have read or heard about. So you need to explore some models and determine their strengths and weaknesses. And ultimately you need to recommend which one is best for using at Skype. As part of making that determination, you will also need to identify several critical issues facing Skype.

The executives want you to include the 7S model, the Congruence Model, and the Burke-Litwin Model in your analysis. And I want you to pick three or four more models to include as well ***** so we have a well-rounded group of OD models.

Prepare a report in which you include the following:

1. For each of the models you are analyzing (six or seven), a brief overview of what the model does.

2. Clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of each model.

3. Identify and discuss two or three issues that Skype is facing.

4. Determine which model you think is the best model to use.

5. Make a recommendation as to which model should be used, I expect you to Make a Strong Case. Explain why your selection would be the best choice. Explain how the recommended model can be used to help diagnose the issues you have identified.

This should be a 5 page paper (not including Title Page and References).

Your paper will be evaluated on the following seven (7) points:

*****¢ Critical thinking ***** Are the concepts of this module applied accurately, logically, and relevantly?

*****¢ Organization - Is the paper organized in a coherent and systematic manner? Are headings included in all papers greater than 2 pages?

*****¢ Clarity - Is the writing clear and the concepts articulated properly? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of response to the questions, or are thoughts conveyed through excessive use of quotations?

*****¢ Referencing (citations and references) - Does the paper use citations and quotation marks where appropriate? Are all references listed in the bibliography used and referred to via citation?

TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS

*****¢ You may use a simple diagram to highlight important factors. However, do not use the diagram in lieu of valuable analysis (or to take up valuable writing space) - it should be in addition to your paper of 4-6 pages of analysis.

*****¢ Just because you have written the minimum four pages does not mean that you have adequately covered the topic. Err on the side of writing more rather than less.

*****¢ Choose the data you use carefully. Is it relevant and important?

*****¢ Include a cover page and reference page, in addition to the 5-7 pages of analysis described above.
