How to write my final essay – Guidelines In your term essay, you will develop a research question based on one of the major readings and pursue this question in a short essay. It is required that you hand in a draft before you start your essay in order to ensure that your question can be appropriately answered in the context of this task. Talk to your instructor early to select an appropriate text. You may not choose a text you wrote a reading response on. Also, you may not choose the same questions that were used as prompts for the other reading responses. If you want to write your essay about a film or text that was not covered in class, please talk to your instructor. Your final essay should contain the following things: 1) Your introduction: A topic / theme / question which you are setting out to answer in your essay. This question / topic / theme has to be approved by the instructor of the course. 2) A (short!) contextualization of your text: Who wrote it, when, and what is the main topic? What are you going to focus on, and why is your chosen approach interesting? 3) A (short!) contextualization for research being already done on this text or film: Cite ONE research article and say (in two or three sentences, not more) what it says about your chosen film or text. 4) Your own analysis of the text or film. Make sure to say how your own approach is DIFFERENT from the research article. Using a connection sentence that points out what the research article is missing is a good way to do this. For your own argument, make sure to cite or quote the primary text, and to develop a strong argument. Draw on theories and discussions we had in class. This is the main part of your essay and should therefore be longest. 5) A (short!) conclusion. Important things to keep in mind: ? Do NOT write a plot summary of your primary text – your instructor will be familiar with the text, and since the assignment is short, summarizing it takes too much space away from your argument. ? Do not repeat the same argument of your research article, and make sure you find your own voice. Also, it is NOT necessary to summarize the whole research article – you already did that for another exercise. ? Focus on your own argument. The main text body of your whole essay should be between 5 and 8 pages long (double- spaced, 12 point).
