Because of the way the decision was made, however, there were larger ramifications than just whether one person was able to be a justice of the peace. The Court ruled that it had the power to declare legislation unconstitutional if necessary, which would maintain the balance of government but would also give the Court more power than it had ever used or held in the past (Faragher, et al., 2009). Naturally, giving too much power to one branch of the government is a poor choice, because that branch may abuse that power. By providing the Court with more power, the Court was able to continue to hold a balance with the other two governmental branches.

The ability of the Supreme Court to rule that a law is unconstitutional is still valid today, and still continues to keep a power balance between it and the other two branches of government. While the Court has often been challenged by those in government who believe it is gaining too much power, the Court has been able to hold its own and continue to move forward toward protection of the people from laws and regulations that are excessive or onerous (Faragher, et al., 2009). While the government must keep control of the country and its people, those people also have rights and responsibilities that have to remain in balance and that should not be able to be simply removed by a government that decides they are no longer acceptable or valuable. The rights of citizens are very significant, and when they are removed or the executive branch attempts to remove them everyone stands to lose out on the issue. The control that was exercised by the Court was strong enough to stand the test of time, and still continues to provide protection for citizens of the United States.
