Management to Leadership Organization

Where do I want to be in 3 years?

In 3 years time I would like to see my goal for leadership materialized, my dreams caming true and my motivation still at the highest point to achieve even more. My aim is to achieve a position in an organizatin where positive impact of my leadership style can be seen on the entire organisation and its employees; whereby the junior staffs reporting to me see my self as a competent leader who has brought a "positive change" in their professional career. I am willing to have made momentous growth within the organization to a point where the stakeholders appreciate everything I perform. It is my priority to prove my self as a trend setter. It is widely accepted that effective leadership does not require intrinsic traits like intelligence, appearance and tallness etc.

In his book, Smith (2002) mentioned everyone can develop the needed leadership traits. I would like to see my self as a leader whose vision is clear, who is having a great idea of what to do next together with a firm understanding of what success looks like and how to accomplish it. But this is not just about having a vision; I see my self also sharing and acting upon it. I intend to prove my self an effective business leader who builds a vision, communicate it with others, passionately work on it and persistently take it to completion.

2. What impact could the current and future leadership environment have on my goal(s)?

In order to achieve my goal what I need in the current and upcoming leadership environment is very obvious. Most current leadership environment requires from

the Enterprise leaders to be able to take appropriate and well-planned decisions in small amount of time that should bring productivity for the company as a whole and assess their talent on their teams. By understanding most moden leadership environment more closely I will be able to achieve my goals in more efficient manner.

As Kouzes and Posner (2012) mentioned, to become an effective leader, it is needed to familiarize oneself with various ways that professonals of Economics, advertising, operations, Human Resource, and R&D solve corporate problems, and also with a variety of tools that are utilized within various segments of the organization. In order to achieve my leadership objectives in the most up-to-date environment, I will learn to use terminologies utilized by all the segments of organization and translate them when needed. And not to forget, effective leaders make sure that they ask right question at right place and seek help from other experts for making judgements or hiring individuals for areas in which they themselves are not specialists. Considering current leadership trends I will need to modify the environment in which the business operates by involving most significant external constituencies, such as the government, the media, shareholders and sponsors etc.

3. Given what I have learned about myself thus far in the program, including this week, what are my strengths? How can I build on these strengths?

My foremost strength is effective communication. It is immensely important for a leader to communicate in a way that cause followers to start believing in him. I will further develop my communication skills by attending seminars on effective business communication and engaging my self in productive conversations with my seniors and experienced leaders within the organization.

My second strength is my motivation to achieve my goals single-mindedly. I will develop this ability further by motivating my entire team to achieve goals in a collective manner. Motivation is highly needed to perform my role more effectively as a leader. As explained by Maxwell (2011) a good leader does never exhibit care free attitude at work, a leader does not only keep going in the chase of target himself but also motivate others to do the same.

My third strength is my dedication towards my career. I am always ready to spend as much time and energy as needed in order to complete the task given to me by the organization. I will build on this strength and set an admirable example for my team members, by working even more hard without any restriction of nine-to-five time limit.

My fourth strength is my Openness, as I always listen to and welcome new ideas given by the team members. I do not feel ashamed in performing tasks in new ways. It will build confidence and trust between leaders and followers, and it also motivate the team to keep trying until the desired goal is achieved.

My fifth strength is my creativity. I possess the talent to do things differently and this creativity provides the capacity to view things from an angle that others have not seen and eventually show a new direction to their followers.

My sixth strength is my sense of humor that plays a crucial role in maintaining a friendly environment and reducing stress and work related pressure. Effective leaders are well aware of how to make use of humor to boost followers. Humor is helpful in maintaining a pleasant environment and help in keeping work atmosphere under control.

My seventh major strength is Integrity. Integrity is defined as the combination of external actions and inner morals. A person of integrity possesses the same features in his inside and outside. This feature makes an individual trustworthy in everyone's eyes. A good leader needed to possess the trust of his followers and hence must exhibit integrity.

Truthful dealings, expected reactions, well-controlled sentiments, and an absence of temperament and rudeness are all indications of integrity. Team members find it easier to share ideas and communicate with a leader who possesses integrity.

My eighth strength is my humbleness. Leaders with humbleness act in way that they are not superior or worse than other team-members. A modest leader tries to give a chance to every team member. Modest leaders also understand that they are still humans and their position does not make them a god.

My ninth strength is Magnanimity. Magnanimity means giving others acknowledgment where someone deserves to be acknowledged. I as a leader make sure that appraisal for any success is spread to as many team members as possible. Moreover, I believe that a good leader present himself firstly and take responsibility for failures before anyone else. This attitude is highly effective in bringing the team members closer to one another. Spreading the recognition and taking the blame is a major characteristic of effective leadership.

Fairness is my last but not the least quality. An effective leader is fair in dealings with the team members. He must confirm all the details and listen to everyone in the team prior to passing judgment. He does not act upon and make conclusions based on incomplete information. When team members start to feel being treated justly, they recompense in the form of faithfulness and loyalty towards work.

4. What are some areas where I need to improve?

My most immediate challenge will be to reallocate my self from peforming a single set of tasks to leading a huge set of business functions. In the beginning this change may leave me feeling completely lost and less certain in my ability to take effective decisions. To become an effective leader I will need to impove my tendency to learn new things and develop new mind-sets. It will be helpful to improve understanding of the most modern techniques and terms used in business functions and getting familiar with the current leaders of those functions. Ability to incorporate the collective efforts of cross-functional teams will help in finding solutions of multifaceted organizational problems. (Heath, 2010)

Identifying, evaluating and constructing an effective organizational systems is highly valuable in managing all sorts of organizational changes efficiently and efficiently. (Oshry, 2007) Moreover, I will need to improve ability to identify the problems the company should give attention to, and identify minor concerns that do not fall not into any one person's job description but are still crucial. It will be must to improve and display the most appropriate behavior at all times and act as a role model for other co-wokers and organization and learn to correspond effectively to inspire others in the organization.

Another area where I need to improve my self is assertiveness. Assertiveness is different from aggressiveness. Assertiveness is the skill to clearly identify what one anticipates so that there will be no confusion or misunderstanding concerning a given task. An effective leader is needed to be assertive to achieve desired goals. Assertiveness comes together with the responsibility to unmistakably understand what followers look forward to from their leader. I am not the only one, large number of leaders face difficulty exhibiting the right amount of assertiveness. It is largely accepted that being underassertive or overassertive are the most widespread weaknesses among prospective leaders.
