[EXCERPT] . . . .
Social Security ReformsSocial security, as Bookman and Kimbrel (2011) point out, is of great importance when it comes to the provision of financial support as well as security (at the basic level) to the elderly. Its effectiveness could, however, be severely weakened by several issues; including the increasing number of those who will be requiring social income in the future. This is in itself a key indication of the urgent need for bold social security reforms. Such reforms should be geared at having in place a system that allows the elderly to retire and live thereafter with dignity, such that they can be able to afford less costly off-the-pocket obligations.
Final Analysis
In the final analysis, the government does not seem keen on tackling this issue head-on. As a matter of fact, "the Obama years have seen few aging-related initiatives, but near-tectonic economic, budgetary, and political events that have heightened pressures on both older people and the policies directed towards them" (Hudson, 2010, P. 10). There is need for a paradigm shift. As Bookman and Kimbrel (2011) point out, there is need for an 'aging-friendly' U.S. -- one that is supportive of senior citizens regardless of their economic, cultural, or even social backgrounds. Ensuring that our senior citizens receive the appropriate care during their sunset years would be the right thing to do. Amongst other things, there is need to ensure that they, alongside their families, do not struggle to access the relevant care -- thereby endangering their health and well-being.
