As to the ethical connection between healthcare outcomes and nursing orientation noted here above, the discussion refers to a pair of valuable sources. Firs, an examination of the nurse's Code of Ethics reveals that a theoretical basis exists to contend a direct correlation between the nurse's self-interest and that which is best for any given patient. There exists an essential obligation for such healthcare practitioners to "examine the conflicts arising between their own personal and professional values, the values and interests of others who are responsible for patient care and health care decisions, as well as those of the patients. Nurses strive to resolve conflicts in ways that ensure patient safety, guard the patient's best interests and preserve the profession integrity of the nurse." (ANA, 2.2) Here, there is provided an ethic based upon the theoretical presumption that a healthcare worker will view his or her own benefit to be inextricably linked to the effective treatment of the patient. In this way, it is clear that an ethical leadership orientation will impact stakeholders in the profession. For nursing leaders, the effective communication of this core value to other nurses will be central to the ethical orientation of the facility as a whole. This suggests that the Code of Ethics is a far-reaching source for defining ethical leadership in the face of such challenges as the current nursing shortage.

Exploring the ethical theories endorsed by both the American Nursing Association and by the World Health Organization here above, as well as considering the applicable effects of ethical orientation in a nursing context, it is clear that various medical and ethical deficiencies in a healthcare staff will be interrelated. This is to argue that the ethical disposition of the staff will be directly correlated to the competence of said staff and the consistency and clarity of its leadership on a code of ethics. Moreover, the ability of a staff to carry out its medical responsibilities is itself an indicator of ethical orientation. In an emergency room or acute care setting, this distinction can have a determinant impact on the ability of the staff to preserve life and diminish pain and suffering.

This is why it should be considered the ethical responsibility of nursing leadership to create an environment that fosters long-term career development, that works to discourage turnover and that ultimately conveys a clear and positive value system to other nurses through action and example.
