, 2014). Their standard therapy consists of surgery and platinum-based cytotoxic chemotherapy. This therapy regimen is most beneficial in the early stages. But in advanced stages, recurrence is likely with increasingly shorter disease-free gaps. These recurrences create a resistance to chemotherapeutic effects and then to bowel obstruction. Death frequently follows this condition (Jayson et al.).Women with the disease who remain responsive to platinum-based drugs may benefit from them for 5 years or more (Jayson et al., 2014). They and their doctor may also opt for anti-angiogenic drugs or poly polymerase inhibitors, which demonstrate some promise for improved survival for ovarian cancer patients in these late stages. Early screening and a corresponding cure at an early stage have so far not been proven. But some progress is expected this year (Jayson et al.).
Part of therapy is the reduction of stress causes by the disease (Pubmed Health, 2013). The patient and her family may need to contact and coordinate with cancer support groups. They can share common experiences and problems with other sufferers, which make them feel that they are not alone in their situation (Pubmed Health).
Prognosis
It must be repeated that ovarian cancer is seldom detected in its early stages and that it is often in an advanced stage when diagnosed (Pubmed Health, 2013; PDQ, 2014). Research reveals that approximately 3 or 4 women with the disease will survive for only a year after diagnosis. It will be advanced when discovered. About half of them, however, have been reported to live longer than 5 years after diagnosis. This survival rate is higher when

Summary and Conclusion
The Struggle Goes On
A new study revealed that most women with ovarian cancer received inadequate treatment only from regular oncologists instead of gynecologic oncologists who have the expertise (Editorial Board, 2013). Insufficient information leads to a lack of the best options for their care. The study also said that only a little more than a third of them were provided with the knowledge they needed. According to this study, 15,000 women die of this disease every year, more commonly from the epithelial type. The records of 13, 321 cases from 1999 to 2006 showed that 37% of them received treatment, based on guidelines established by an alliance of major cancer centers. The surgeons who operated on 10 or more of them followed these guidelines, which resulted in at least a five-year survival of 35% of the patients. This compares with only 25% of those who survived following treatment by surgeons, who did not follow these guidelines. Ovarian cancer patients have not received as much attention as breast cancer advocates. This is sadly their situation in the face of the recent increase in the five-year survival rate from 74% in 1980 to 99% today if diagnosed in an early stage (Editorial Board). #
