The public are the final users of information gathered by journalists. They are the audience of these journalists. Therefore, the journalists need to articulate their role clearly to the public. They should help them understand how news corporations operate. The standards set by the journalists and news corporations should also be clearly stated. This will build trust and credibility of the journalists to the public since they will not demand journalists to do more than what is dictated by their role.The viewer's bill of rights
As defined by Andeweg (62-63)
, the viewer's bill of rights is the unofficial list of rights that citizens have when dealing with news corporations and journalists. There are five rights that citizens have. The first is that the journalists define the right of the public to know. The journalist is the intermediary who asks questions on behalf of the public and conducts investigations. The second right is that the public has the right to ethical gathering and verifying of information to make news. The journalist should follow the code of ethics of the society or association of professional journalists. They should ensure they only report vetted information from reputable sources.
The third right that the public has is the right to solution-oriented journalism. The journalist should make attempt to find solutions or at least highlight possible solutions to problems in addition to highlighting and defining problems. The fourth right is that the public has the right to privacy. While the journalist should inform the public, when information that is to be released to the public will infringe on an individual's

Conclusion
Journalists have an obligation to the truth. Based on this obligation to journalistic truth, there is need for journalists to understand the five key characteristics that must be fulfilled in order for journalist truth to be achieved. At the same time, the public has a part to play in ensuring that journalistic truth is upheld. They must hold the journalists accountable and also understand their rights in order for journalists to respect them and provide them with credible, reliable, and useful information.
