Considerable time and resources are dedicated by health care organizations ranging from medical equipment suppliers and staffing firms to tertiary care academic medical centers to get ready for and go through Joint Commission surveys. There is growing concern, though, over the lack of demonstrable progress towards meeting the organization's stated goals for many. Even though the Joint Commission more and more refers to and demands evidence-based medicine in its regulatory requirements, there is a relative scarcity of evidence signifying any significant quality improvement due to its efforts, while there is a growing body of literature showing no enhancement or actual decline in quality despite the increasingly rigorous and expensive necessities (How can I make the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO/JACHO) process easier, 2012)."The Joint Commission has accredited hospitals for more than 60 years and today it accredits approximately 4,168 general, children's, long-term acute, psychiatric, rehabilitation and specialty hospitals, and 378 critical access hospitals, through a separate accreditation program. Approximately 82% of the nation's hospitals are currently accredited by The Joint Commission (Facts about hospital accreditation, 2011). To earn and maintain accreditation, a hospital must endure an on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team. The survey team can comprise one or more health care professionals, including a physician, nurse, life safety code specialist, or hospital administrator who has senior management level experience. Joint Commission principles address the hospital's performance in particular areas, and indicate necessities to make sure that patient care is presented in a safe manner and in a secure environment. The Joint Commission develops its standards in discussion with health care experts, providers and researchers, as well as measurement experts, purchasers and customers (Facts about hospital accreditation, 2011).
