Jesus God the Son

Verse 1 Chapter One of the Gospel according to Saint John (Haugaard 2000) reads:

In the beginning the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

The Word was and is Jesus, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity consists of the First Person God the Father, the Second Person Jesus, and the Third Person, the Holy Spirit. The Triune Trinity is One God (1 John 5:7):

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, Word and the Holy Ghost and these three are one.

As the Word, Jesus created the heavens and the earth (John 1:3, Colossians 1:16 and Hebrews 1:2) in six days (Genesis 1:3-24 and 27 and Job 40:15-17), culminating in the creation of Adam and Eve after God's own image and likeness. God placed the first man and woman in Eden and tested their loyalty, but they disobeyed God and sinned. Their sin incurred eternal death and severed them from God. Man dies only once and is then judged (Hebrews 9:27). Divine justice dictates this but man does not have the capability repay the penalty exacted by perfect justice. God Himself offers the solution to fallen man by sending the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, to become flesh to live among men, teach and offer a way out of their eternal ruin by accepting salvation in Him.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

God Himself, in the Second Person, must come down to the level of man and defeat the power of sin and death by taking upon Himself the penalty of sin and offer the reward of salvation to men. This divine plan alone can repay the penalty incurred by man through disobedience and only a Person with the same stature of the Offended can justly recompense. This is Jesus God the Son, the Messiah or Redeemer of fallen man.

As the Second Adam, Jesus re-enacted the scene in the Garden of Eden and reversed the choice of the First Adam, through perfect obedience to God the Father. He came into the world without the curse of sin that has passed from Adam down to the last mortal by being conceived of the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Divine Trinity and born of a virgin, Mary of Nazareth. He was named Jesus, Mary's firstborn son. Jesus the Word and only begotten Son of the Father, dwelt with us in human flesh (Matthew 1:23 and John 1:14) in fulfillment of the Divine plan of salvation, of which He was perfectly aware and to which He was totally dedicated. Jesus was in the world, which He Himself made, but the world, or the people in it did not know Him as God (John 1:10). This was to be revealed only to a few chosen and then to His church after His ascension into heaven. One of these was His Mother Mary, then a virgin, to whom an angel appeared. The angel told her that she was to conceive by the Holy Spirit and the one she would bear was the Son of God:

The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Highest will overshadow you, therefore also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God (Luke 1:35)."

In his short public ministry, Jesus demonstrated and preached about His divinity. He healed the sick, raised the dead and fed the multitude under miraculous circumstances (Luke 3:23), Matthew 11:5, John 6:5-14). His forerunner, John the Baptist, referred to Him as the Messiah, unto whom the Spirit of God descended in the form of a dove and a voice confirming that Jesus is the Son of God:

This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. (Matt 3:17)"

In the company of His first disciples, Jesus walked on the sea, calmed the storm and cast out demons (Mark 6:47-50, Mark 1:23-28, 4:35-41). After 40 days and 40 nights of fasting in the wilderness, Jesus was tempted by the devil to prove that He is the Son of God by turning stones into bread and hurling Himself down from the top of a temple (Matt 4:4-6). He preached that men should come to God trustingly as little children, "for such is the kingdom of God (Mark 10:13-16)." He taught obedience to God the Father from His own example of perfect obedience, even to the point of dying on the cross (Philippians 2:8), as His part in the divine plan, for which alone He became flesh.

Publicly, Jesus asserted that He is the Son of God:

He who believes in Him is not condemned, but he who does not believe is condemned already because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God (John 3"18)."

Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shalt not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. (John 5:24-25)"

When He restored the sight of a man blind from birth, Jesus asked the man if he believed on the Son of God. The man asked Who the Son of God is and Jesus said:

You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with You. (John 9:35-38)

The Jews were very much offended by Jesus' claim of divinity:

and the My Father are one (John 10:30)." which they consider blasphemy, a very grave offense. Jesus replies:

Do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, you are blaspheming because I said I am the Son of God? If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe in Me. But if I do, though you do not believe

Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me and I in Him.

This claim was very pointed and clear and eventually led the Jews to plot His execution.

Although Jesus healed the sick, He deliberately ignored the news of His dear friend Lazarus' sickness. He told those around Him

This sickness is not unto death but for the glory of God that the Son of God may be glorified through it.(John 11:4)."

Lazarus and his sisters Martha and Mary knew that Jesus is the Son of God and God the Son. He waited for Lazarus to die precisely to show Who He is. He says to Martha:

I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he dead, shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"

Martha answers clearly: "Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, Who is to come into the world (John 11:25-27)."

Those whom Jesus delivered from demon possession acknowledged that He is the Son of God and were frightened (Matt 8:8):

What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?" And begged Him to send them to a herd of swine, instead. Jesus commanded them out of the possessed man and enter the swine, which ran down violently into the sea and drowned. Unclean spirits acknowledged Him as the Son of God (Mark 3:11).

His apostles who were with Him in a boat during a storm witnessed Jesus rebuking the wind and the storm and walking on the sea. They worshipped Him, saying:

Truly, You are the Son of God (Matt 14:26-33)."

When the High Priest put Him under oath and asked Him bluntly if He is the Son of God, Jesus said: "You said it. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man, sitting at the right hand of power, and coming upon the clouds of heaven (Matt 26:64)."

The centurion and the guards of the temple attested to it. When Jesus cried aloud and heaved His last, the temple was torn from top to bottom. There was an earthquake, the rocks were split, graves were opened, many holy people who had died rose and appeared to many in he holy city. The centurion and those guarding Jesus saw these things and said among themselves:

Truly, this was the Son of God! (Matt 27:50-54)."

The very first verse of the Gospel written by the evangelist Mark opens with:

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God." And reiterates the record of Matthew on the centurion and the guards:
