For example, Albeniz began to thoroughly incorporate the guitar in his works. Of interest, Albeniz utilized peculiar traits from Ansalusian folk music. Through this massive innovation, Albeniz achieved a very distinct style that more artistic and spontaneous than prior works. This is best represented in his work "Cordoba," which many experts believe is one of his most innovative pieces (Chase, 1959).What fascinates me about Albeniz is his desire to continually innovate. Many consider Albeniz the most creative and forward-thinking Spanish composer of his generation. Although keyboard music formed the core of his output, he made enduring contributions to western society though opera and orchestral repertoire. During this period, the status quo would equate too much fame and fortune. As noted earlier, Albeniz was gifted from birth. He could have easily matriculated in a customary fashion in the traditional graces of classical music. Instead, much like western society, he decided to innovate and transcend tradition. Between 1905 and 1909 Albeniz created what many consider to be his best collection of pieces. The most notable work is Iberia (1905 -- 09), a collection of 12 virtuoso piano pieces, considered by many to be representative of the spirit of Spain.
Apart from his music, I believe Albeniz a more cultural aspect to western civilization in regards to its classical music. The Spanish culture is rich with history, emotion, and prestige. His exposure in Spain to Cesar Franck's ideas and to the work of contemporaries such as Faure, Chausson, d'Indy and Dukes led him to pursue more ambitious forms. Secondly, I believe Albeniz paved the way for more of a cultural influence in music. By enhancing the understanding of his classical audience, it appears the Albeniz inspired a litany of new composers to follow in his footsteps. Many of these new composers originated in western society and were influence by the style of Albeniz. However, what I believe these composers can learn from Albeniz is perseverance. As mentioned briefly above, Albeniz took an atypical path to his success. Even though he was talented, his talent could not make him successful. I believe his willingness to mature ultimately created the Albeniz we often listen to today. I believe this is an intangible contribution to many minorities within western society (Clark, 1999).
Too often, particularly in America today, we hear constant talk of discrimination or racial tensions. We often hear people touting how difficult it is to live in America and get ahead. When one simply reviews the life of Albeniz, these arguments lose substance. He travelled the work, living on the streets and playing piano for boat tickets. He was a child prodigy that got kicked out of one of the most illustrious schools during his period. Through all these hardships, Albeniz as a minority, persevered. Not only did he persevere but he used his Spanish heritage to inspire a generation of composers who immolate his style. I believe this intangible contribution to western society is his most profound one. People often discount the music of Albeniz to his sheer talent and brilliance. One cannot argue however, how he persevered and provided the world with music it had never before heard or seen.
