[EXCERPT] . . . .

Two individuals will participate in the pilot and will constitute the sample for the pilot study. The pilot study participants were selected on the basis of three variables: 1) They are creative professionals and colleagues of the researcher, and so meet the standard for a convenience sample; 2) the participants are currently working in the fields of education and art; and, 3) the participants are interested in supporting the purpose of the study.

Interview Methods

Data-gathering instruments for this pilot study will consist of a structured interview protocol with both open-ended questions and closed-end question (Jansen, 2010). The closed-end questions will predominantly be used for collecting demographic information about the participants. Two participants will be invited to be a confidential interviewee. All interviews will be held in a public space convenient for the participants. The interviews will take approximately two hours to conduct. There will be no payment for the participants' time. The process of obtaining informed consent and the actual interview process will be conducted in conformance with the ethical guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Instrumentation

The face-to-face interviews will consist of three sections of questions, each focused on different research questions. The first section will ask about the origin and purpose of imagination as perceived by the participants. The second section will ask about the process of imagination in one's life and its relationship to emotions, thoughts, and senses. The third segment will about the function of imagination and will address if imagination c

Data Analysis

Subsequent to each interview, data will be compiled and coded according to the constant comparison method (Dye, 2000, Glaser, 1965). The constant comparison methods is described by Glaser and Strauss (cited in Lincoln & Guba, 1985, p. 339) as consisting of four stages: 1) A process of comparing data points to each category, 2) a process of integrating categories and their characteristics; a process of delimiting the theory according to the data sets; and generating and recording the theory. (p. 339). As Goetz and LeCompte (1981) point out, the constant comparison method "combines inductive category coding with a simultaneous comparison of all social incidents observed (p. 58). Data points are constantly compared with previously -- now categorized -- data points throughout the data collection and analysis process, continuously feeding back into the process of category coding (Goetz & LeCompte, 1981).
