Interracial relationships have long been at the forefront of debate in the United States and throughout the world. In fact interracial relationships were once illegal and some were punished by death if they were found with an individual from the opposite race. The purpose of this discussion is to explore interracial relationships as it pertains to Marriage, Adoption, Gay and Lesbian relationship. The research will explore how people feel about different races dating, the advantages and disadvantages of being in an interracial relationship.As a result of the history of racial relations in the United States, interracial relationships have long been controversial. Although the controversy over interracial relationships has always existed and continues to exist, the number of interracial couples has continued to rise. There are all types of interracial relationships including Straight and Gay Relationships and also interracial adoptions.
Additionally, although most people envision interracial relationships in terms of the Black and White Race, the most prevalent type of interracial relationship is between White men and Asian women. It is unclear why this type of interracial relationship is the most prevalent, but it is evident that there seems to be much less objection to this type of interracial relationship, when compared with interracial relationships between White and Black people.
As it relates to interracial marriage and relationships, objection often comes from a belief that the races should not mix.

However, in recent years there has been a larger percentage of interracial couples and interracial marriage. According to one article, people under the age of 30 tend to be more color blind than other individuals (Henderson). Indeed young people seem to be much more accepting of interracial relationships then generations past. One study of 2600 college students found that nearly a quarter of the participants had been involved in an interracial relationship (Knox et al.). In addition, 50% of those participating in the study wouldn't mind being in interracial relationships at some time in the future (Knox et al.). The following graph provided by the U.S. census bureau also suggests a substantial increase in the number of interracial relationships over the last 50 years.
The article points out that the degree of acceptance that interracial couples receive is most often dictated by their geographic location (Henderson). Indeed, in the Southern region of the United States and smaller cities throughout the United States there is still a great deal of hostility shown towards interracial relationships. However in larger cities such as New York where there are very diverse populations, people tend to be more accepting of interracial relationships.
According to a study conducted by Cornell University, Black people born in America are more likely to marry a white person, than Black people born in other places such as the Caribbean on nations in Africa. The article explains that current question is whether the new black population -- from the West Indies and Africa -- will, over time, more strongly identify with the native-born African-American population or with the majority white population," Lichter said. "There also is a growing literature on ethnic antagonisms between native-born blacks and African-born immigrants. Hence our interest in intermarriage among diverse black populations -- intermarriage reveals important information on inter-group relations (Crawford)."
In addition to interracial relationships as it pertains to heterosexuals, there are also interracial relationships involving gay and lesbian individuals (Berg).
