*two kinds of pain: (1) physical (physical pain alone does not make you miserable, your attitude toward the pain makes you miserable) and (2) mental (you have more control over this kind of pain) when you start feeling hurt over another's actions, you also might start "discovering" other bad traits, leading to worse feelings

*parental rejection teaches children to hate themselves

*we can (1) increase objectivity and (2) break habits where we put selves at risk, (3) rid selves of agendas that conflict with higher priorities, (4) replace self defeating rants and damnation with realistic preferences, and (5) accept ourselves for being imperfect.

Unit Paper: Reading response to online readings

The readings assigned within this unit focused upon the notion that as individuals we are not powerless in the face of negative thoughts. When contrasted with much of the information on the Internet, we see that there is a great deal of controversy when it comes to mental illness, its causes, and its treatment. When one peruses the Internet, it is relatively easy to find articles which will help you to self-diagnose yourself and then self-treat yourself for whatever psychosis or neurosis you might have. In conducting the research, several articles addressed some of the issues raised in the book in which I had further questions relating to negative thoughts and the personal will to address and treat them.

There is a consensus that diagnoses of mental and psychological illness are increasing in the United States. It seems that what used to be melancholy or the doldrums or a case of the blues is now diagnosed as mild to moderate depression. What used to be considered antsy is now ADHD. One of the articles addressed this issue and provided helpful guidance and clarification that this is not necessarily an increase in the amount of mental illness in America; rather, it is reflective of a more technologically advanced America that has the capability to uncover disease and then treat it. Additionally, another article commented that upon receiving a diagnosis, many individuals actually feel relieved because now there is a name for what they are experiencing as well as a treatment plan.

In analyzing and synthesizing the reading within this unit, it has been rather difficult to wholeheartedly agree or feel comfortable with the notion that the mentally ill individual has the power to will the irrational beliefs away. I do agree with many of the Internet articles which provide information on how to help maintain a positive state of mind. Indeed, there is power in breathing, positive thinking, stretching, and moving. These activities help to alleviate stress and move oxygen through the brain as well as release endorphins. The foregoing are all positive factors in maintaining a stable mental state of mind. However, I am not convinced that the only biological negative effect that cannot be willed away is grief. Indeed, after being close to several individuals with mental illnesses arising from issues not associated with grief, it is hard to believe that through the mere will to change their thinking, they would be able to will their demons away. I will continue to search the Internet for information in this area as it is truly a fascinating and controversial area which continues to need further explanation.

On a practical level, I do believe that the smaller, non-clinical negative feelings can be willed away through a redirection of thinking. As demonstrated by the article about negative feelings in the workplace, as individuals we definitely have a vested interest in learning strategies to redirect negativity. However, when a person gets to a point where they are clinically depressed, I do not expect that mind over matter alone will help them recover to the mental stability that he/she once knew.

In this article, the author discusses the stages of grief. In order to make it through the difficult grieving period, the author recommends releasing the feelings and talking. Through talking and letting the emotions go, the grief stricken individual can then work through the emotions and attain an eventual sense of peace. Furthermore, grief is a not a process of saying "goodbye." Rather, it is a process of finding a new place for that special person in your heart and mind.

Depression in children is all too often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Oftentimes, medical personnel simply believe that the child is going through a phase and will soon grow out of it. However, many children suffer from more than just the blues and could benefit from treatment and therapy. If depression goes unchecked, there is a risk for suicide. In teenagers, girls are more apt to attempt suicide while boys are more apt to be successful should they actually attempt suicide. Boys and girls from abusive homes are more apt to consider suicide as an option.

The technology era has individuals hooked up to cell phones and laptops as well as has us multitasking our lives away. As such, what once was considered as troublesome, daydreaming, is now considered a tool from which to reclaim one's sense of peace and serenity. Chapter 5 claims that if sustained feelings usually stem from your conscious and unconscious thinking, you rarely feel glad or sad just because of outside events.
