[EXCERPT] . . . .
A 105-car train carrying oil from North Dakota derailed outside Galena Illinois in 2015; and a 94-car Canadian National Railway crude oil train derailed near Gogama, Ontario, destroying a bridge (Lowy, p. 1).Why are there so many train accidents in the U.S. and Canada? Lowy explains that the "oil boom" has "dramatically increased the amount of oil shipped by rail"; in 2014 there were 493,126 tank cars of crude oil moved by rail, up from 407,761 tank cars in 2013 (Lowy, p. 2). Of course, not every train moves volatile oil products or other toxic substances on the rails, but citizens are concerned when huge explosions occur and are shown on TV news shows.
Meanwhile, on the positive side of the issue, rail transportation has a "low level of space consumption" along its lines, but terminals do occupy fairly large portions of land, which increases the cost of operating supply chains counting on rail transportation (Rodrigue, et al., 2014). The most common vehicle assets for rail transportation are "hopper cars" (open wagons), box cars (that carry general and refrigerated goods), "tank cars" that carry oil and other liquids, and "flat wagons" that carry container loads (from maritime supply chain links), manufactured goods, wood and agricultural equipment) (Rodrigue, p. 2).
The primary asset of rail transportation, according to Rodrigue, is its ability to " ... haul large quantities of goods" and substantial numbers of people "over long distances"; this makes rail transportation more efficient than road transportation (Rodrigue, p. 2).

In conclusion, when it comes to the desire to leave the smallest carbon footprint possible, "Green logistics objectives" need to be carefully studied by companies. The logistics objectives should include the evaluation / selection of sustainable logistics providers and transport fleets" (Fahimnia, 2). As an example, once the product has reach a port (by air or sea), the company that seeks to be green has to choose between road versus rail transportation services; rail is seen as greener when bulk freight is "captured at the source and delivered to a final land destination," perhaps a shipping port. But for "non-bulk commodities, trucks can bring products "door-to-door" -- while rail heads are often "far away" from supply chain venues (Fahimnia, 3). Careful research can determine which method of transport leads to a sustainable supply chain, which, in a world growing warmer due to climate change, is vitally important to the bottom line and to the potential carbon footprint.
