d. Process control document (PCD)

Processes that discontinue to be in control and/or capable are stated in a process control document. Consequently, the product feature is placed under a reduced inspection plan. Item inspection proceeds for acceptance of the product feature until the cause has been analyzed, revised and process capability and control are re-instated. Process control is important to evaluate in order to see the inner working of the system of management.

i. Key elements/requirements

As relevant, other variation control methods like tooling, control of process KCs, standard processes, mistake proofing, and so forth will be utilized to assure process control and capability. Measurable evidence will show if controls are effective. The producer is not relieved one focus is on KCs. Focus on KCs do not help the producer meet all drawing characteristics, specifications, and other customer requirements and/or invoked standards.

hodology to minimize variation. As an article states: "Six Sigma began in 1986 as a statistically-based method to reduce variation in electronic manufacturing processes in Motorola Inc. In the U.S.A. Today, twenty-something years on, Six Sigma is used as an all-encompassing business performance methodology, all over the world, in organizations as diverse as local government departments, prisons, hospitals, the armed forces, banks, and multi-nationals corporations" (Chapman, 2011, p. 1). Among Six Sigma is lean and 5S.

i. Six Sigma, lean, 5S, etc.

Six Sigma is first and foremost, Total Quality Management. Six Sigma can be seen as several things because over time, it had various meanings. It is also interpreted in various ways. The best of Six Sigma is its continual evolution. As Chapman states: "A data-driven method for achieving near perfect quality. Six Sigma analysis can focus on any element of production or service, and has a strong emphasis on statistical analysis in design, manufacturing and customer-oriented activities" (Chapman, 2011, p. 1). Another system, the lean system is a great alternative to the more well-known Six Sigma.

"A lean manufacturing system is one that meets high throughput or service demands with very little inventory. Despite its significant success, kanban control is not a perfect mechanism to control a lean system" (Bonvik, 1999, p. 1). Kanban control utilizes the levels of buffer inventories in the system to manage production. As a buffer reaches its preset peak level, the upstream machine is alerted to stop production of that part type. It may include 5S.

"A 5S (Five S) program is usually a part of, and the key component of establishing a Visual Workplace and are both a part of Kaizen - a system of continual improvement - which is a component of lean manufacturing" (Stephenson, 2013, p. 1). The 5S program focuses on organization, cleanliness, standardization, and having visual order. It has simple principles and expected results like: efficiency, improved profitability, safety, and service. Japan began development of this program and 5S stands for the "Japanese words seiri (tidiness), seiton (orderliness), seiso (cleanliness), seiketsu (standardization), and shitsuke (discipline)" (Stephenson, 2013, p. 1).

2. Conclusion

The AS9103 and the AS9100C are worthwhile standards to apply to any organization. It allows for modification and evaluation of processes within management and production. Variances in production can easily be identified and monitored through the use of these standards. As the economy appears to get worse, it is important to always promote efficiency and capability within an organization, company, or business.

Enhanced awareness of the processes also allows for greater control. As mentioned previously, sometimes it is best reduce product manufacturing variation in order to better serve customer needs and demands. Without adequate control, resources risk the chance of being squandered. These standards help a company better manage their assets and processes.

a. Importance of the application

"AS9103 defines a Key Characteristic for a part as "those selected geometrical, material properties, functional and/or cosmetic features, which are measurable, whose variation control is necessary in meeting Customer requirements and enhancing Customer Satisfaction" (Magnuson, 2012, p. 1). Variation control is a major component for a successful manufacturer. Without standards like the AS9103, Key Characteristics would not be found, or at least be identified in a fast manner. This method of monitoring and evaluation is integral to operating services and manufacturing products.

Aerospace standards need continual improvement in order to function at maximum capacity without sacrificing quality. The application make it so the necessary processes are easier and faster to do. Without such processes, people operating as managers would have a difficult time identifying and addressing issues within the process.

b. Benefits of being AS9103 compliance

There is a growing need for evolution of standards. The continual growth and modification of AS9103 for quality systems to better work with ERP, PLM, and SCM. It also enables compliance through lean process with AS9103. AS9103 also incorporate AS processes into ERP, PLM, QMS, SCM systems. This process assures compliance with AS9103 which in turn decreases labor cost for sharing common data among systems.

Additionally, it decreases quality escapes in the internal shops and supply chain. It allows for expertise in industry topics in PLM and QMS. Furthermore, it offers original expertise and experience through AS9100 standards. Lastly, it is the best in class software integrator and solution provider.

The benefits certainly offer a variety of necessary and vital processes to an industry in need of precision, quality, and most importantly, quality management. Everyone knows and trusts the quality of the AS9100 standards. They have been long established and work. It would make sense to use the AS9100 standards to organize and assist within a management framework.
