Yet this makes things awkward when we realize that Mrs. Linde has not come for Nora's breathless personal confessions, although Nora misunderstands this. I suggest Ibsen means us to interpret Mrs. Linde's revelations about the lovelessness of her marital life, and the utter lack of emotion with which she faced widowhood, with "not even any sorrow or grief" over Mr. Linde's death as being as emotionless as she describes (Ibsen 12). Crucially it is Nora who misinterprets this unfeeling revelation as something which must have sentimental meaning, or this is how I think we must view Nora's decision to confess.

After all, Mrs. Linde's visit is rather calculated and cold blooded: she hopes to use her connection with Nora to secure a better-paying job. In a sense Nora is to vouch for Mrs. Linde's respectability, which she will be only too happy to do now that she has confessed her own less-than-respectable deed. So in Act Two, the balance is power is somewhat altered and Mrs. Linde now plays a different role. Here we see her trudge through the snow to help dress Nora like a doll in the elaborate costume-dress for the party. Now Mrs. Linde presses Nora hard about the misdeed: "don't prevaricate, Nora. Do you suppose I don't guess who lent you the two hundred and fifty pounds" (Ibsen 41). The irony is reversed when we realize that Mrs. Linde's "guess" is off the mark: she assumes Nora has used her erotic wiles or a sob story to get it from the doctor, Rank. In reality, the answer
